Arrow Dreambox DM 800 HD - specs?

Just after some info on the 800 (not the 8000). Dream are being cagey as usual about this forthcoming release, but it looks like it's going to be marketed as a smaller/lower-spec version of the 8000. Regarding the issues Dream were having acquiring an HDCP licence, it looks like the 800 has DVI rather than HDMI - but that's about all I've been able to find out. Presumably it'll have a swappable tuner-? Can anyone shed some light?

Re: Dreambox DM 800 HD - specs?

very little info out there.

the 800 is to the 8000 as the 600 is to the 7025 - though it may run enigma 2, instead of enigma 1 (I say 600 & not the 500 because the 800 will take a Hard Drive).

You can put a Hard Drive in an 800, but it wont have twin tuners, so you can only record what you watch.

Release date has been slated for March.... though I wouldnt hold my breath on that.

I would assume it will have a swappable tuner as its really designed for a german market & with Premiere/Kabel showing stuff in HD they would be foolish not to - there again I dont know what the split of DVB-S / DVB-C is in Germany.

The 8000 will be the all singing & dancing one.. Hope they stay to the original spec minus the HDMI. Orignal Spec had 4 Tuners slots!!! - That would be great eh? 1 box does both satellite & cable :-D

Re: Dreambox DM 800 HD - specs?

Think it is very poor that they don't include a way of getting sound out of the box other than the digital out! For people like me who don't have an amp with the tv, I will defo be giving this a miss.. But since a lot of the groups have been rumoured to be boycotting this (i.e. not creating images for it), then might be worth a miss anyway

You could utilise the analogue audio which is transmitted via the scart socket using a scart to twin phono lead

Speaking of scart - can anyone confirm the 800 will output component over scart, the same as previous models have been able to?

Do you know why groups are wanting to boycott this product?

Tech support @ Dreambox said the DM800 HD will allow analogue component out. not 100% sure if this via scart or DVI. Though they intimated via DVI in their email.

The release will be 1st/2nd week of April with the 8000 later in May.

Re: Dreambox DM 800 HD - specs?

Hey Guys,

There certainly has been a lot of talk about the new Dreamboxes, i have been reading much of it with interest.

I currently have a Starview box which isn't the best and I want to update to a dual tunner. The wife is complaining that we currently don't have any capability in our setup (which she constantly reminds me cost a small fortune) to record TV. Obviously I could go for Sky+ but that's an expensive long term solution, so I was initially thinking of the Dreambox 7025. What do you guys reckon - is it worth waiting for the new 8000?

I would appreciate your comments.

Many thanks,

Ross

Like most (all?) satellite receivers, Blu-ray players and media streamers, it will use a hardware solution for H264/MPEG2 decoding, rather than using its CPU.

The CPU is used for housekeeping and control, with the AV decoding done by separate dedicated video silicon.

Good to hear. I have been toying with getting a DM800HD for a while. I guess I've been put off by price, performance uncertainty, and the number of offers for clones going around.
Think it's time to put my DM500S on Fleabay.

Just a shame the DM500 is pretty worthless now days thanks to all the clones.

Certainly sounds like what I need, as can't say I've ever missed the option to record stuff. Basically, if I ain't got time to watch it there and then, then I won't have time later!

Re: Dreambox DM 800 HD - specs?

From what I remember reading, the 500 is the same as the 800, but without the option for an internal hdd (you can still have an external connected via e-sata). Also, it doesn't have usb included, so anything like barry allen multiboot etc will be missing...

Personally, I like to have the usb for storing my epg data (saves flash and the hdd running constantly). But I'd definately go for the 500hd as a second box for hd content... (think I'd still prefer the 800 - 8000 if could afford - as the main box)

Same with everyone unfortunately ... all I need to do is ask for a pay rise I suppose. Although if I did get that, there'd be no point as the missus would spend it all before I got a chance to use it! lol

Personally, I like to have the usb for storing my epg data (saves flash and the hdd running constantly). But I'd definately go for the 500hd as a second box for hd content... (think I'd still prefer the 800 - 8000 if could afford - as the main box)
Just a few corrections m8, there is a mini USB port on the 500HD, it can be seen quite clearly on the pics floating about.

EPG data is only loaded from the HDD at bootup when your HDD is awake anyway, so it doesn't run constantly at all.

BTW, I don't regret at all buying my 8000. 4 tuners fitted in mine. The latest thing for the DB is tuner sharing known as vtuner ! So for example a 500HD would be able to share the tuners of an 8k over lan.
