Angry How do I get a satellite dish in my block of flats?

I wonder if anyone has any first hand or legal experience in this matter.

I live in a massive block of flats, where the managing company flatly refuses individual satellite dish installation for "aesthetic" reasons. They are allegedly looking for installation of a shared dish for Sky in the roof, but claim that it is difficult, expensive, etc. Ideally I would like my own dish to receive international channels of my choice, but would settle for Sky.

There is actually a European Commission ruling showing they have no right to prohibit access to satellite TV, but obviously getting to the European Court might be a bit time-consuming and expensive! (I am happy to email the document to anyone)

This must be a common problem, how do others get round it?

It usually costs £150+ per dwelling. All they need do is get agreements from enough tenants to cover the total cost.

I believe I've seen sky adverts touting at least 4 people to sign up to make it a gower.

Re: How do I get a satellite dish in my block of flats?

Thanks guys, the problem is that the standard option is for up to 48 flats and 3 floors, my block is more than twice as big which makes it more expensive and requires 3 dishes, which those *£"#$%^ managing agents are not allowing.

Anyone tried to explore the legal avenue in a similar situation?

You mean the Multimo, here
http://www.satcure.co.uk/accs/page17.htm#multimo

40cm in diameter so only just smaller than a Sky minidish in diameter

Re: How do I get a satellite dish in my block of flats?

Do you have any windows facing the right direction, I got sky successfully through a non double glazed window with 60cm dish for a while - obviously signal quality suffers and not the most aesthetic of solution, but might work.

Re: How do I get a satellite dish in my block of flats?

Thanks again to all, I think an indoor dish is too much of a hassle in my relatively small flat, although the Multimo is tempting.

The balcony idea is something I thought of, but a tiny balcony that I have access to is specifically stated in my lease to belong to the landlord, not me ! I could put the dish out and see if anyone notices, but at some point some idiotic neighbour is bound to report me.

Re: How do I get a satellite dish in my block of flats?

Sorry to hear that. I've got a Sky dish feed into my flat but that was only because the agents were having so much trouble with people putting up dishes without permission they finally caved in and paid for a communal dish to be put up.

Any dish permanently fixed to the building even your balcony is likely to be in contravention of lease regulations etc so they could ask you to remove it. If you know what you're doing you could probably mount it on a portable pole stand or something... but you'd need to know you're facing in the right direction for the satellite. If it's round the other side of the building you're not going to get any signal.

do you know if HD sky is still available in blocks of flats? I am moving into a modern development, built in 2000.

I wish my neighbours were like yours! Nobody here seems prepared to stand up to the managing agents. They are meant to be getting new quotes, if nothing happens I may look into directions etc, thanks

Re: How do I get a satellite dish in my block of flats?

I have a similar problem. My block actually has a communal dish that works great, but I have Sky+ (actually about to upgrade to HD), so I need two feeds, which I can't get. These portable dishes look nice, but a bit expensive. Any more ideas?

EU ruling document

Dear Proux,
Please would you send me a copy or a link to the Eu Commission document you referred to about not being able to ban access to Satellite TV.

The EU directive he is referring to is the "Television sans frontieres" ( see here - http://europa.eu/legislation_summari.../l24101_en.htm) and the main problem is that EU directive only stops blocking of FTA transmissions - it also has provisos giving owners of properties and local authorities (via planning regulations etc) the rights to limit the number (total 2 on any one building in the UK) or totally forbid or restrict their siting (in conservation areas or on listed buildings. So many people misquote these directives as giving anyone the right to install a dish anywhere which they do not.

So basically there is no regulation or directive EU or UK that gives anyone the absolute right to install a satellite dish permanently affixed to any building without permission from the owner of the building and the local council if planning permission is required. With DSO approaching completion across the UK over the next year or so councils will more than likely start applying the planning permission requirements more strictly.

My answer to the question would have been the same "if you're able to" - we don't know that.
Try looking at his profile to see what other Contact Info he has, if any.

hello, i think the question has been answered, and I can't find the document anyway as it was too long ago. I remember that some restrictions were mentioned, but my feel was that it was very much supportive of everyone's right to information

BTW I do receive pm's, as long as the sender is allowed to send them as already mentioned
