Hi All
Many thanks for the two post answers. I have an update - from the powers that be... ie from Technisat I have this:
"Dear Mr........
Many thanks for your request and your interest in our products.
Unfortunately there is no experience with the SS HD card in C-Band. The card was published for Europe's consumer market, where C-Band doesn't make sense.
Nevertheless the card should function with the latest software in C-Band.
We wonder how you can use the tv-center-sw 1.0.7.2 or 1.0.7.6 for the skystar1
CI. This software was designed for our skystar HD-cards.
You can find latest drivers and software for skystar 1 CI under the following
link:

Please, feel free to test this one.
Best regards

The link is to the SS 1 software I was already using (the CD that came with the card when new) v2.4.2.1
I finally got the SS HD to scan and play C Band, the LNB setting of 5150 is accepted with several warnings on the latest s/w version and the card scans and plays fine. CPU usage is not high - around 35% on 1800(real)mhz athlon - ie AMD2200+.
As to alternative software - the Card runs fine in MyTheatre, and with some configuring, in RitzDVB.
The SS1 CI scans fine with 2.4.2.1 but uses 100% CPU trying to play - which it doesn't, the mpeg picture is visible but only frozen and still - like a jpeg, The SS1 cannot work with MyTheatre as not supported, and works well with AltDVB. However AltDVB needs the LNB set as KULinear (not 5150)and the frequencies to be scanned also need changing as can be found on the net via google - ie to be set via ku frequencies - that is 14900mhz minus the C Band frequency required (3599 in this case) = 11311 needs to be set - per this link advice:
http://www.satelliteguys.us/free-air...ock-cband.html
This solution works fine.
I have tried several other PVR progz - but AltDVB and MyTheatre really rock for me. Great software - not simple, but generally intuitive and no manuals need to be read to use them.
cheers to all. :-)
