Sat TV = What do i need ?

I am new to all this, i dont even know if im posting in the correct section of this board.

Basically i wish to purchase satellite tv , but i dont know what dish or reciever to purchase ?

I noticed in MAPLIN in the UK that they have a dish and reciever for about £80, does anyone know if this is any good ? and what can you recieve on it ?

Basically i just want to recieve 1,000's of channels from all around the world, and be able to watch football if that is possible.

IF any one could help, please let me know, Cheers

Re: Sat TV = What do i need ?

Yes , you can recieve thousands of channels from around the world ,many free [FTA] and many not if you have the right equipment , namely a dish with LNB and a suitable receiver .To receive multi satellites you will need a motorised dish , this just involves fitting a dish [minimum size=80cm, 1m =ideal]to a motor on a pole .There are two main types of motor , one which runs on the DiseqC setting and the other being H-H [Horizon to Horizon] , the latter being especially suited to larger dishes are are mainly very robust motors .My H-H motor is a Jeager 128 which runs on a 36v power supply ,most do.
Recievers , the most important bits , lots of them at all sorts of prices . Some Hi-Def models are now making there way onto the market .Some receivers can be quite complex linking to networks and needing loaded images to receive the channels , others can be programmed by using a PC , but ,most will use cards or Cam's .One of the easiest receiver's to use on the market is a range by Technomate. These models are idealy suited to both fixed dish or motorised and are very easy to set up .Some have single CI [Conditional Interface ] and a card reader , some have twin CI and no card reader .Some can be programmed by Pc to receive all channels without cards or Cams .

Please note : it is illegal to receive channels or services to which you have not subsribed to the service.

That said ,there are many websites that will inform of ways around this ,but cannot be discussed on this forum.
I hope I have given some helpfull information regarding your interest in Sat-TV . A web search will start you off in the right direction regarding receivers and other equipment or even a montly Sat mag from the newsagent .
