Satellite Dish To Recieve ASTRA, HOT BIRD & EUROBIRD...?

I am looking into recieving free-to-air satellite television. I have done a fair bit of research and my current location can recieve the following satellites:

ASTRA 1C
ASTRA 1D
ASTRA 1E
ASTRA 1F
ASTRA 1G
ASTRA 1H
ASTRA 1KR
ASTRA 2A
ASTRA 2B
ASTRA 2C
ASTRA 2D
EUTELSAT HOT BIRD 2
EUTELSAT HOT BIRD 6
EUTELSAT HOT BIRD 7A
EUTELSAT HOT BIRD 8
EUROBIRD 1

I believe an 80CM satellite dish should be suitable to recieve all of these satellites with a good signal. I plan to connect the satellite dish to a computer with a satellite PCI card in it. Could you give me a little more information into exactly what dish or any other accesories I would require? I believe to recieve all of these satellites I would need a dish with dual LNB's or even tri LNB's, could you confirm this?

Many thanks.

Plus a multi LNB holder and a Sat Meter and cable/clips and F Connectors.

There's a good explanation with photos here:

Or get a Moteck SG2100a motor for very little $$$.

Re: Satellite Dish To Recieve ASTRA, HOT BIRD & EUROBIRD...?

Has anyone used a TechniSat Multytenne before? I have read reviews and it gets nothing besides praise. I read that the dish picks up good quality signals, but has only been tested as far North as Birmingham, I wondered if a significant difference would be known about in Sheffield.

Re: Satellite Dish To Recieve ASTRA, HOT BIRD & EUROBIRD...?

Morning all,

This is my first post so be gentle! Im looking to setup a fairly basic system to get BBC HD and a few others..potentially the footie *ahem*

I dont really want to go the way of a motorised dish, but dont want to be restricted to 1 Sat. I have seen a Quad LNB 60 cm dish (ebay 220071502735)

Can someone explain to me about multi LNB's please.. is it one physical LNB right, that can pick up up to 4 Sats? What range does it have ie how far apart can the 4 be? how configurable is it, and what are the alternatives?

EDIT

Im now thinking that to receive more than one sat on a fixed dish, you will need more than one physical LNB...but can someone confirm what is meant by 'QUAD LNB' in regard to the Dish in the link?

Finally is there a setup guide on here for a fixed dish? There are plenty for motorised but non for fixed multi LNB's.

thanks again..great site!

Re: Satellite Dish To Recieve ASTRA, HOT BIRD & EUROBIRD...?

It probably means it can be connected to 4 receivers.

A small dish with 4 LNBs - think about the way a dish works. It points at one satellite (or group of sats close together) and "bounces" the signal onto the LNB. A small dish can't really point at 4 different satellites at the same time and have good signal strength on all of them e.g. from 28.2E to 13E. People do it (and I'm sure someone will post here about how easy/ great it is) but it's much easier with a motor and a 90cm dish.

Re: Satellite Dish To Recieve ASTRA, HOT BIRD & EUROBIRD...?

All I want to do really pickup Astra 2 (Freesat, BBC HD etc I think) and Eutelsat W2 (football), 28e and 16e respectively, but not sure whether a motorised dish or having 2 LNB's on one dish is the cheapest and easiest way to go!

Also anyone know what size dish is required to get Eutelsat W2?

Re: Satellite Dish To Recieve ASTRA, HOT BIRD & EUROBIRD...?

Looks like an 80cm or 90cm with 2 LNBs and a diseqc switch will get it:

Or try a 3 way LNB to get 16E, 19.2E and 28.2E

Re: Satellite Dish To Recieve ASTRA, HOT BIRD & EUROBIRD...?

Can you explain why you think a 80-90 cm is required?

According to those satellite maps, both Eutelsat W2 and Astra 2, fall well within the 65-85 cm range...Is it something to do with receiving 2 signals that requires the dish to be bigger?

I was kind of hoping to get away with a 60cm dish...maybe im being overly optimistic!

Also are there any non asthetic differences between a meshed dish and a solid one?

Cheers

Re: Satellite Dish To Recieve ASTRA, HOT BIRD & EUROBIRD...?

Probably because 2 of the LNB's are not focused at the full dish face, thus losing some signal.

Re: Satellite Dish To Recieve ASTRA, HOT BIRD & EUROBIRD...?

60cm might be OK with 1 LNB but with 2? Which will be the prime focus and which is likely to have poor reception? But it's up to you
