Outdoor aerials

Hi i was wondering to recieve freeview could i simply attach an outdoor aerial outside my window, and then wire it through into my bedroom, and would this give a signal any better than an indoor aerial...which is crap lol.

Yes.

It's because doing so would reduce the attenuation of the signal caused by obstructions such as glass, woodwork, plaster, render, breezeblock, brick, paint etc. etc. etc. (anything except air actually)

Yes, especially if it's pointing at your local transmitter.

That's the key point.
If your window is on the side of the house furthest from the transmitter it will probably be worse than an indoor aerial - unless you can find a useful reflection with minimal multipath.

The analogue and digital reception predictors on the Wolfbane website predict which transmitters you can receive. They give the bearing of each transmitter at your location together with lots of other information. Try selecting Distant or DX if you don't get any results from the default Local.

Another easy method is to look and see where everyone else's aerial is pointing in your neighbourhood

Easy theory, but I imust be unlucky because everyehere I have chosen to live it has been aerials every-which-way! Incidentally Wolfbane bearings I presum are either based on OS Grid North or True North, Compasses work to Magnetic North. How essential is perfectly accurate alignment with the chosen TX?

Not as essential as with a satellite TV dish!

Depends on the "gain" of the aerial. As a general guide, the more elements an aerial has, the more accurately it must be aligned. This is fairly easy with current analogue transmissions (you simply look at the TV picture) but it's gonna be harder when analogue is switched off (soon).

Avoid aligning the same way as any vertically polarized aerials. They are usually low-power relays, which do not carry Freeview. Just get close to the general heading, you can always do some last-minute tweaks.

Well i can get about 3 channels, BBC One wales, BBC2 Wales, and BBC 3. lol.

I don't live in wales either, but can't get the normal BBC channels. Anyway i think i should give up on freeview, does the freesat from sky give a perfect picture? And do you need to buy it from SKY or do people sell the stuff on ebay and just install it myself? lol.
