tvMax (PVR+MC+DVB+BB)? What do you think?

Hi,

Just got an email from these guys.

http://www.tvmax.co.uk

They are launching a service called tvMax.

Basically it looks like a set-top box, which includes...
1. Freeview
2. Media Centre
3. PVR
4. Broadband (yes, they are an ISP called NDO, I use them)
5. Some other web services
For about 25 quid a month or so.

To be honest I am not too sure whether I should post this on this forum, the PVR forum, or the Media Centre forum...

So what do you guys think?

I think it looks pretty impressive, if I didn't already have an HTPC.
Obviously I don't have the spec yet, but I don't think it has a DVD player... which is a shame.

But I think this is gonna be a good device for someone who is going to get broadband anyway, they might as well pay a few quid extra and get this box.

Thinking about it may be this thread should belong to the PVR forum.
Can a mod move this please!

Thanks.

You can now sign up.
£50 for 8MB broadband unlimited
£25 for 8MB capped

I like the media streaming feature, but there is no info on what it can stream, eg filetypes.
It is also a bit pricey maybe.

Alternative
BeThere ADSL2+ 24MB - £24
PVR - £150-£200
Streaming Device eg Snazio £150-£200
Total for one year: £588-£688

For TVMax 12 months will be £600, and also a 18 month contract.

There is 18 months contract, 40 pounds connection fee, and everything is plus VAT! Bloody hell! Not cheap at all!

And its PVR is very ugly (physically), nothing like the one that was in their "preview"!!

Don't think I'm gonna go for it.

It is just an ISP giving you a freeview box with a recording function/media centre, or am I missing something?

You might as well chose a decent ISP and buy your own box, it isn't worth a subscription.

They are a decent isp (under the name NDO).
But yea you are right, not worth the subscription fee.

As long as you don't want to surf and watch "tv" at the same time. TV by broadband is very "iffy".

Good news!

Price for 8mb unlimited has come down to only 36 quids including VAT.
This is now tempting again! And comes with a free router too!
