top-up tv seems quite expensive for not much gain i.m.o. the degree of complexity of user interface is little better than the sky u.i. - isn't skys cheapest deal only 15 quid per month ? - 'only' twice the price...not for me to tell you or your neighbour what to do, but if it was me, i'd stick with freeview or go to sky

I take it she has never had sky?
You are able to get FREESAT - there is a one off payment of £150 where you will receive a Sky box, minidish and an initial viewing card, plus professional standard installation of your equipment. The difference with FREESAT and FREEVIEW - with freesat you get 120 tv channels compared to 34 with freeview, 80 radio channels compared to freeview's 24 channels.
I know it is a lot for initial payment, but the coverage is a lot higher with sky and probably a better reception.
If you would like to check it out go to www.freesatfromsky.co.uk

You can pick up Freeview boxes at most of the main supermarkets for about £30-50. I noticed that Marks and Spencer are also selling one ! Not sure of the price though. I can't understand what the 'complexity of user interface' is all about'. I bought a basic Freeview box (without Top-up) for a pensioner friend of mine and she is very happy with it. She had previously been a Sky subscriber and had Top-up for a while so she could make the comparison. The 100+ channels is of no interest to her (or me for that matter) as she is not interested in Pop music, Sport or repeats of rubbish American tv series and she can watch movies on her DVD player. An investment of about £40 should do the trick for your friend. It is important to undrstand that budgets for OAPs are often on the low side.

'complexity of user interface' was not about ageism - that was never in my mind, it was just an observation about relative complexity
and if you read the post, the point i was making was that there was no reason to spend on top-up as it is a waste of money, unless you're loaded in which case get proper subs tv i.e. sky
but i was not making assumptions based on age, unlike...

IMO the actual quality of the 'Free' lineup is much better on Freeview than Freesat. Stuff like E4, More4, TMF and UK history are free on Freeview, but will cost you at least 15 quid a month on Sky.
Also, with Freeview you don't have to trawl through loads of unavailable (ie Pay) channels on the EPG to get to what you want.
I wouldn't be too worried about TopUP TV, unless of course it's UK Gold she's after. At least you can pay for it on a month-by-month basis, rather than being locked into it for 12 months as a new Sky subscriber would be.
Of course, if you're a fan of 'God' stations and shopping channels then Freesat might actually offer something extra.

Neither was I, but with age comes wisdom and my friend has decided that neither Sky nor Top-up offered her the value for money she wanted.

Looking at the listings on that site the only ones I'd watch are the usual BBC, ITV, C4, Ch5 and Men & Motors.
The rest are trash.
Where's E4, More4, abc1, Ftn?
Better off with a normal TV aerial!
And as to Sky being better reception than Freeview, all I can say is compare them side by side on your own TV. For me, Freeview picture is better.
I'd like UK Gold and Eurosport (don't like the idea of only 10 hours a day of Eurosport tho ) but can't find any decent reviews of TUTV compatible Freeview boxes to get a decent one.
