Swapping HDD from Amstd to Pace.. Problems....

Ok, so I have bagged me a Pace3100 and tried swapping the 250Gb drive thats been working fine in my Amstrad across to the Pace box (which came with a 40Gb drive) and the Pace won't even switch on, I left it for ages and nothing, just red light. Stick the 40Gb drive it came with in there and it switches on in a minute or so just fine.

What am I doign wrong? does the 250Gb drive need to be wiped before I put it in the Pace? does the firmware of the Pace need updating? if so, how do you do that?

Many thanks peeps.

The most probable reason is that the 3100 can't deliver enough power for the bigger drive. Since you're going to have to wipe the hard drive anyway, by all means try that.

The Pace power supply is supposedly stronger than the Amstrad one so I doubt that this is the problem.

I suspect that either the larger drive is simply not compatible with the Pace unit (not all large drives are compatible with all types of Sky+ so it is quite possible to have one that works on Amstrad but not on Pace, or vice-versa) or it just needs formatting.

I meant that the power supply could be faulty - these 3100 series boxes have been around for quite a while now, and power supplies age faster than any other part of the box. Of course, it could be that the drive might just need wiping - I suggested that too The Pace 3100 can handle drives up to (and including) 250GB.

The drive will need a low level format before it goes in the new box...

Ok pulled out the drive and piggy-backed it onto an XP box I have and just removed the partition that was on it, system then fired up OK, performed a full system reset and after a couple of teething problems, it now seems fine.

Thanks Guys.
