Are you sure it's an original? My money's on that you've brought a clone.

My harmony is rubbish with this box.

ps: Original Dreamboxes don't sell for less than £300 very often.

I have a question tho. Did you notice any response difference between dm800 (300mhz) and se (400mhz) models?

Has anyone had the pleasure of using both this and a VU+? I've used a friends VU+ and its absolutely light years ahead of any dreambox ive used upto the dm800HD, wondering how the SE or 500HD compares?

I've got a V+Duo and had a DM800, i'd go for the V+Duo as it had 2 tuners.
That would be the only reason though, prefer Dreamboxes myself.

If moneys not a problem get yourself a DM8000.

Hello to everyone.

Just tossing in my two cents here about the DM800HDse. I just purchased it around Christmas since my 3 year and 6 month old DM800 just died with a power surge. Sadly, it was at the wrong place at the wrong time(from the living room to the bedroom), and it didn´t have a surge protector like the rest of the av family components here at home.

It made me wonder what to buy next. Since it worked almost every day(with an internal hard drive), I had a fan installed, and choosing the right image firmware, it came to be stable and less prone to heat buildup. So I must say that, it did what it was supposed to do and a little bit more. I also own a Humax HDCI-2000 which is a major toaster, and has had it's PSU replaced. Trouble is that I still have a Nokia 9800s which is from the year 2000 still working flawlessly in my den receiving the BBC and ITV channels with amazing picture quality that not even the new receivers come close to it! Yes the channel changing is very slow, menus are a pain to change, but, it still works.

There may be more options out there, but Dream Multimedia has been around for some time. Nokia pulled out of the STB biz early in the decade, Humax is still around, but not very competitive. I also owned a Neotion 601 which was to be "the future" with it's mpeg-4 tuner option, but also pulled out. I was tempted to buy the Vu +Duo(no doubt about the quality, my friend owns one and I love it), but since I am used to the Dreambox, and saw that Dream came out with this second edition, I opted to continue with Dream. I am thinking of buying a Vu +Duo for the den. My friend is going to lend me his unit, and that way I can compare both units side-by-side. It will be good to do this, because I am tempted to see the results with my setup here at home. Since the DM800se is small in size, it might end up in the den and leave the Vu +Duo in the living room.

I am though, satisfied with the DM800se for now. Compared to the DM800, quicker zapping, much cooler working temperatures(average 33ºC compared to the DM800 which had an average temp. of 50ºC) , and very stable. Less proning to crashes(depending on which image you upload). HD channies are great but also depending on which image you upload and fine tune. It is a pain to fine tune the image quality in the menu option in of some fw images, but once you get it right, they look great. SD channel are average but that might just be me. The tuner is a little less sensitive(the DM800 had an Alps tuner), but still o.k. for what it does. Let's see when I try out the Vu +Duo.

Have you had both? What 'better support' did you get with the DM?

Quantity is not always quality.

I have owned the DM800 and its not a patch on the UNO in my opinion.

I found the PQ better as was zapping. Much larger VFD on the UNO than the DM800 and the not insignificant price differential.

As for much better support, top of my head its supported by PLI, BH, HDF, VTI and VIX, enough for most people don't you think.

Clones seem ok for 12 months or so but in my experience then the trouble starts. Had tuner problems with mine.

Well having played with both I'd disagree. Also picture quality will also come down to TV you have. I'd also stay well away from latest VIX image as its **** and advice OP if he gets the UNO to stick with PLi or BH.

Of course it's all down to opinions.

Opinions indeed...I guess Stanman would disagree with that comment () and after 8 months on BH so would I....my cams are much more stable with VIX but of course I've heard the complete opposite lol

Whats **** about the Vix image?

Have it on a Ultimo, ET5K, ET9K, DUO and not had any of the issues floating around the net.

I use my boxes to watch TV and make live easier recording etc and the image does exactly what it says on the tin.

As for recent problems with the image, those have been experienced by other images as well as a quick google will show.

End of the day its personal preference.

Sorry for my bad English. I see no meaning to buy a 800hd, if you are not using it for watching all sky uk chanels(saving money)...As a former Sky UK customer, I can tell you that the current dm800hd has a better picture quality than the sky box hd.And 5.1 is great too..

Dreambox are the original linux box and Enigma is pretty much their thing. They make 'the' satellite boxes.

You then have all the other manufacturers that have now slowly come round to linux and E2.

In short if you have the money then Dreambox.

VU make some great boxes and their raison d'etre is that they have priced themselves right in the market for a quality linux box. The Duo is their real claim to fame as it went head to head with a DM8000 for a fraction of the price.

The 3 standout VU models are Solo, Duo and Ultimo. The Uno has pretty much become a betwix and between model in this current line up.

Hope that helps

I am looking for a replacement for my old Echostar multi sat digital receiver which has now failed after more than 10 years.

I am quite interested in either Dreambox DM7020 HDTV or DM800SE. But I've also heard good reviews of the VU+ too?

I have NEVER owned a Linux sat unit before and have never used Linux either. How complicated is it to download and install the various software "images"? If I do it wrong is it easy to kill the unit or do you just do a factory reset?

I'm looking for a Multi Sat receiver prferably with twin tuners and ability to record 2 channels at the same time to a HDD. Able to view 4.2.2 feeds with blind search. Both SD and HD. Network capabilities.

Can any of these units transfer recordings from the built in HDD onto my PC HDD via the network connections?

Do any of these units offer Wireless networking or is it all ethernet?

Can any of them access the full 7 day EPG for FreeSat?

It's not complicated but it does require some learning to understand how the box works! There are plenty of dedicated sat forums out there to help though!

Both Vu+ and Dreambox will do everything on your list apart from 4:2:2 - The Vu+ box doesn't, not sure about Dreambox!

Both can!

You can get a wireless dongle for either!

Both can, no worries there!

They won't show 4:2:2 on the TV but they can stream it to a PC to be decoded.
