Satellite virgin!!

Hi There,

I'm thinking of upgrading to Satellite from cable, but have no idea exactly what i'd need. I've done a bit of research on the net and like the look of the 'VU+DuoHD' receiver, and also would like a motorised wall mounted dish set-up (transparent to keep the missus happy if possible ).

I want the system for mainly watching football (saturday 3.pms would be good) and History channels.

Is there anyone on here who could help with either:-
  • telling me exactly what i need, supplying and installing it
  • or just fitting and setting up a pre-bought system
Would happily spend about £800 on the system, if it was easy to get to grips with.

Any takers? Please help

Welcome to AVF. Are you ruling out both Freesat and Sky subscription?

Hi Logiciel,

Thanks for replying. I don't really want to go down the subsciption route with either freesat or SKY, am interested in getting as many channels for a little as possible (if you know what i mean ).

I used to run a Eurovox, then a Kryptview on cable if that helps.

I just don't have a clue what's involved with Satellite, but am eager to learn.

Welcome to the forum,
I was in a similar situation to you about 5 months ago, suffice to say theres alot of reading to be done.. especially about the recievers, what they can and cant do etc...

I didnt install my setup but in hindsight i wish i had. sometimes its better to go through setup problems at install (you'll learn more) rather than rely on others to do a good job, but it depends on who you get...unfortunately i was slightly unlucky...

google search and i became very good friends over the last couple of months...

Thanks Star79.

Had a feeling it was going to be that way, was just hoping for some help as I am clueless at the minute

I'll definately be getting someone else to mount the dish though (wouldn't get me up a ladder for love nor money!!).

At least people are a bit more welcoming on this forum, unlike others i've recently been on where they treat you like a child or worse if you're coming from a cable background (I think a lot more will be moving over as N3 gets rolled out quicker and quicker).

No probs matey....never was much of a tv guy (cable or sat) but i spent 5 wonderful years in africa ...and boy do they love their satellites over there, (mind you they dont have much choice..no cable there...).

i got a massive 6 metre dish installed that gave me everything ....subscribed of course, i think it worked out to approx $700 a year.

I came back home and i had to get a satellite fitted unfortunately due to laws congestion and mostly the wife i had to settle for a 1m dish....

keep reading especially on every aspect of the receiver you want to buy and what you want to achieve....good luck mate...

If you are looking to view pay channels subscription free then you are a year or two too late, all satellite pay TV channels are as secure as N3 (if not more secure) and in particular all the channels carrying EPL football. There is only one pay package hackable at present and probably by the time your system is installed that will have gone over to a more secure encryption.

EPL football is available on pay TV packages from over £200 upwards per year. Card sharing which is most reliable from payservers is illegal and cannot be discussed here but again is NOT free.

A motorised system will give you some access to FTA (Free to air - subscription free) channels broadcasting with English audio and often foreign subtitles and finding those channels and programme lists for them can be a tedious job and require foreign language skills. It really is a hobby toy and not very practical for a main domestic TV source needing education for all users of the system.

Freesat gets you a lot of channels for free, Sky gets you a lot more for a subscription, generic satellite receivers get you more still for subscriptions that can work out at a lot more than Sky, and some receivers get you channels without subscribing but the ways to do that cannot be discussed in the forum.
To get anything you need a dish with either a single LNB for one satellite or a bracket with two or more LNBs for more than one, or a motorised dish for as many satellites as can be received in your location.
There are threads here that will tell you a lot about receivers such as the one you mention, and such as Dreambox which seems to be particularly popular.
A local installer will quote you for the dish and cabling, whichever type you decide on.
Davemurgatroyd's last sentence sums up the situation perfectly imho.

Thanks for all your replies.

I guess i've got a bit of research to be doing

I am willing to pay an annual subscription, but refuse to line Murdochs pockets with any more of my hard earned. It does annoy me that you can go abroad and watch football live on T.V for a fraction of the cost that you have to pay in this country

Anyway, thanks for all your help and if any local (Cheshire) installers want to get in-touch (is there a PM function, or do they have to go through the Mods?) please feel free.

Best regards,

Slim75

That's OK and I'm no Sky supporter but have you seen the subscriptions for foreign football channels recently?

Are they creeping up in price aswell?

Do they not know we are still in an Economic downturn, how dare they

To be fair, like I said i'm new to all this and obviously need to do a lot more research before I jump in.

I was looking at the Humax Foxsat-HDR Freesat PVR as I understand will also work with a motorised dish. Realisticaly with a large motorised sat dish could it pick up regular Saturday 3pm footy games from Europe that are free to air or are non of those typre of channels FTA anymore?

Just spotted this from one of your earlier posts.

Do you realise that the dish doesn't have to be high up on the roof (like a UHF aerial), unless you need to clear obstacles or prevent vandalism?

Mine is wall mounted at head height and I get 30E to 30W which covers most satellites.

Good luck.

You won`t find any FTA 3pm premiership matches anywhere, all on the pay packages. I`ve heard that the Humax isn`t brilliant to use as a receiver for a multisat setup (although is pretty good for freesat)

Mrs TG prefers it where it is, then I'm not risking life and limb when I clear the snow off it (as happened last winter).

It probably would, but it's really what it says it is, a Freesat receiver, meant to be used for the free channels - complete with the Freesat EPG - that are carried on the Astra satellites at 28.2/28.5E. For a motorised system it's usual to go for a generic satellite receiver. I don't think "any more" applies. The relevant channels were and remain on subscription, and very expensive subscription.

They started at a high level and are certainly not going to go in the other direction. You're right to look into all the details and this is as good a place as any to find them.

We are putting a lot of systems in atm for the footy.. most are getting motorised to make sure they're ready before the KO and then choosing the subscriber themselves.. but even though it's very close it's still a bit in the air. There are lots of 3pm subsciption suppliers receivable in the UK with small or not too big a dish ... just google them .. and the rights issue is still in the European courts.

The one a lot are after that has replaced Showtime./ Showsports on Nilesat (7w= that needed 2.4m dishes where you are & 3m+ in Manchester )... that's now been replaced by ADSPORTS = Abu Dhabi Sports HD- that needs a big dish too but looks a very good package all in HD and subs are quoted at less than £80 but you also need a paired box... those dish sizes are mainly for pubs or if you have a bit of land and are into it.

What team do you support- United's on everywhere - Man City should be on ADSPORTS a lot more since Abu Dhabi own them - Stoke has a really good fan base and did very well on Showsports over the last few years as Sky didn't show all their matches - Showsports did so it was very good for pubs that could get it as pubs that had Sky couldn't show it ... and Sky couldn't ban it if they weren't showing Stoke matches - Or I'd love to have seen that legal battle.. but we think they did it another way that's partly why Showsports lost it to Abu Dhabi..

You'll love a motorised once you get into it - even a small dish on a motor - but as said... 3pm KO is big business so you won't see many EPL matches free. We don't do card share or slingbox stuff- we just don't get involved but we know plenty do -we just put the systems in and it's up to individuals what they do with it all.

Sorry, your PM's not working... probably because you've only a few posts -... & It's against AVForum rules to post contact details on posts or deals etc.. unless you are an advertiser .. and we respect that .. we we're looking at advertising in AVForums & a couple of others like Techwatch etc.. but not decided as yet.

I can give you good advice on here though.. I know the area very well .. what dish sizes for what satellites etc..

Not sure about the Satellites at all, but do know the Missus wouldn't let me have a dish any bigger than 1m

Just want to know exactly what i'd need (including a good receiver preferably able to receive HD signals) and also would like a point in the right direction to good suppliers/installers like your self

You can choose a dish size from a Sky dish to 1m. You can still get a lot of channels on a Sky dish on a motor (5000+ plus all the Freesat channels and over 30 satellites from all over the place - some carry US UK movies/ comedy/ soaps / programs etc.. around the arc... usually subtitled.. but some of the best need a minimum of a good quality 85cm or 90 to get Arabsat and the popular US English free movies in Macclesfield and a sensitive receiver & LNB plus a really good installation - anything less and you either won't get them or they will break up & dissapear in any bad weather.

Dish makes we will use are Raven Sky dishes z1 or z2 / Triax / Orbital / Gibertini and some others we'll modify first to get them up to standard if someone has bought them already. Black Ultra LNBs / Technomate receivers mostly and various Linux receivers (& their images)/ Webro cable & strong brackets we make.

Not sure about history channel- yesterday that was called History is on Freeview(aerial) and Kuwait 2 seems to be the documentary channel now on Arabsat. There was a HD History channel free on 15w I think and various other channels that feature docu's now and again.. and there are the Freesat channels like CBS Reality etc.. as any motorised will motor to them too.

Football is all over the Forums atm with the various providers as stated above... we don't get involved in Card Share, programming or patching etc.. we just do the engineering install wise whether it's a linux box or TM and it's up to individuals etc.. what they do after..

Plenty about the receiver you mentioned in you 1st post around...

One thing we come across a lot is that Linux receivers aren't usually as good at controlling motors- blind scanning or sensitivity as Technomates are (the 3/5 & 6000 series) so they do what they do best but you can lose functionality in those areas so you can set a motorised system up and a TM gets 7w Nilesat (1-1.1+ needed in Macc btw) and good 26e, 16e etc.. and then switch over to the Linux receiver and it can't find 7w and 26e etc.. is a lot lower.

My advice for anyone is, if you can, is put any recent Technomate together with a Linux box - looped through and use the TM to do what it is good at (as above- motor control/ blind scan & sensitivity) and the Linux box for what it is good at ... (unless the linux receiver & image is OK for those).

Have you considered staying with cable and gettting the Kryptview A780. I have sold a lot of these lately and have had no complaints.
