Couldn't Receive Five in the West Country

My boss told me that during a recent holiday to the West country although they had a Sky box they couldn't receive channel 5. He also said that it was a common problem in parts of Scotland and Wales.

I don't understand why a Satellite box which is working and picking up channels would have problems with a free channel like 5?

Is this possible with Freesat or Sky? and if so why.

Five is encrypted on Sky, it is a subscription problem.
He needs to sort out a 'Free from Sky' card.

Re: Couldn't Receive Five in the West Country

The coverage of FIVE on satellite is the same as the other main channels.

To receive it on a Sky box on channel 105 the box must be used with an up to date subscription or freesatfromsky card as it is encrypted.
It can, however, be received by tuning it in manually and accessing it through 'Other Channels'
See Possible to view Five via Other Channels? - Sky - Digital Spy Forums

The above is the version received by Freesat boxes

Alright cheers lads, I found it rather confusing that you could get other channels and not Five.
Anyway it was more out of curiosity I asked rather than a problem solving exercise as neither of us live there and his holiday ended a week ago. lol!

So if you can get Sky you get all the channels, there's no regional bias as I take it the technolgy doesn't work like that?

You only get the ITV 1 region that your card specifies though you can add them all using add channels
