Sky Multiroom - No Fixed Phone Line

Hi all,

Any of you people had this experience?

I subscribe to Sky and have Sky + HD in one room and Sky+ in another. I also have a standard Sky box in a bedroom, but with no subscription - only the box standard free to air channels and not very many of them at that I must add.

The two 'subscription' boxes were installed by Sky's Technicians in the absence of a fixed land line. (We use VOIP) However, we recently decided to swallow the extra £9.75 a month and pay the subscription for the bedroom. I called sky, explained the situation and was told by their call centre that the new viewing card could be activated remotely and that I shouldn't worry about not having a fixed land line.

Great.

Until I received the new card and it came to actually activating it with Sky. They are ADAMANT that they will not activate the additional card unless it is connected to a phone line. (VOIP (with Vonage) will not work - we've tried that previously).

Any ideas or links to other threads where a similar problem has been encountered?

Thanks

1 Install, excellent thanks, that could well be my answer. How does this device install - is it just a case of plugging it into the line before the phone or is there a big buggeration factor?

And would you know whether this item would do the same job - it's for sale on ebay and could well end up being far cheaper.

Ta.

1 Install - I contacted soho66.co.uk who supply their device to ask whether it would do the job I require and this was their response: -

"Where I would like to say that it would enable your Sky TV system to talk to Sky, I'm afraid that the reality would be quite the opposite. Using VoIP for data transmission is something that is temperamental at the best of times, and unusable at others. We have had the one customer using a credit card machine with our services, which I believe was a success but, owing to the unreliable nature of data over VoIP, we do not encourage, make any guarantees, or support this type of communication.

Further to this, you wouldn't be able to use any other equipment with Vonage, as they have their own customised hardware and, although they are a VoIP provider using the standard SIP protocol, I believe they will not divulge their settings to allow any customers own equipment to connect to their service."

Not what I wanted to hear, but at least it means I can start pursuing other options that may actually work!!
