sat nav on those double din units on ebay etc

you know screens like this : http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...MEWA:IT&ih=013

they advertise they can be used with sat nav,
well im wondering how you get them to work, i assume theres no gps receiver in them so you would need to add that, also no software, so ho does the software work?

does a slave machine running the software connect to the unit to just use as a display device?

i cant find any information,

im getting a unit like that i posted anyhow for dvd duties, and i run tomtom navigator on the pda, so im wondering if it would be cheap to get tomtom running on it.

anyone actually know for sure how they work?

Work colleague of mine has one. He uses a normal USB conected GPS receiver. Beleive the only software he can get to work well on it is one named "iGo" (TomTom is a bit "iffy" on it he says)

His appears to run a hacked/cutdown version of windows mobile 5 i think.

Don't expect any useful support from the HK seller

It's all in the dash unit.

Too be fair it's not a bad bit of kit, especially at the sort of prices they go for. Think he paid around £100 for his.

As long as your fairly handy with Windows Mobile for the Os and some pliers and wire strippers you should be ok.

Biggest problem he found was the documentation was all in Chinglish and post sales support was non existent.

Re: sat nav on those double din units on ebay etc

yeah im expecting the manuals etc to be useless!

and the sellers too!

im just struggling to find out where the windows software is preloaded as they dont mention it anywhere, in the units, or how if they do have a cut down version of ce for instance where the map media is taken from (ie sd card)

i may try and ask a seller for the laugh, you never know i my get a buyer that actually uses/likes/knows his stock
