TomTom map share, is it any good?

I am starting to think about getting my first sat nav but I am worried about the maps going out of date quickly as there is a lot of new road construction taking place around where I live. I see that Tom tom have a free map sharing feature on many of their models and was wondering how good is it seeing that it relies on Joe Public to do the updating.

Re: TomTom map share, is it any good?

Mapshare is more for changes like roads being blocked, roads being made one way, wrong street names or points of interest in the wrong place. For those kind of things, it works pretty well and I would rather have it than not (- currently up to about 61,500 on my TomTom 910). It was originally supposed to be much more radical i.e. you could add your own streets or roundabouts but these were taken out of the beta (- maybe this'll be improved at some point, I'm not sure).

You do have various levels of Mapshare in the options to decide which user updates to accept (- for example just those which have been verified by TomTom or going to the other extreme those just uploaded by a single user). It's no substitute for having up to date maps though ( the latest being 7.15 which is based on the October 2007 Tele Atlas data).

It's worth having a look at this link which covers Mapshare in more detail.

Re: TomTom map share, is it any good?

This has pricked my interest, having not updated my tomtom for a couple of years! Hope you don't mind me jumping in.

However, although I have ticked the appropriate boxes on my TT One to accept updates, I have the up to date software and recent version of the GB map, I cannot download the updates. I gather they are automatically installed one TT Home is started, yet there's a little box at the top telling me there are over 15,000 updates waiting to be installed!
