tomtom 510 speed camera warning
Can anyone tell me how the TomTom 510 warns you that you are approaching a speed camera, does it give a beep / speak a warning or simply flash on screen.

Re: tomtom 510 speed camera warning
As standard, it will flash on the screen and play a warning beep.
I beleive that you can add extra files to change the warning sounds.

Re: tomtom 510 speed camera warning
We are just setting up the 710 and i was asked a question similar about the cameras. Do they come on automatically set up or do you have to download them?

Re: tomtom 510 speed camera warning
The TomTom camera database is supplied, but it's not very good. I downloaded the pocketgps camera database.

Re: tomtom 510 speed camera warning
The TomTom camera warning database only has a 1 month trial period from new and will give you a small speed box outlined in red about 6mm2 with a advanced beep warning of about 300yds. It works well enough but sometimes it does not know about a installed camera and sometimes thinks there is a installed camera when there isnt! So in all instances best to try and keep an eye on the road and where the sat nav thinks the camera's are.

They work out of the box for 1 month no setting up required.

Re: tomtom 510 speed camera warning
I spent £20.66 for 1yr of the official tomtom database and am very disapointed.
Tomtom have changed the way it's implemented into the software and it's now not part of P.O.I. (points of interest)
This means there's no opportunity to change the warning sound or the distance. Your stuck with a single 'beep', which doesn't stand out.
I gave the pocketgps one ago, and it's 1000% better! They all appear in P.O.I. with 20+ different types of camera listed, all with there own icon. Plus each type of camera can be set independantly with choice of sound and distance before warning.

Just got a TT510, using the installed camera base but looking at other options. However it looks like this is quite a drag getting all these POIs to the TT and then keeping it all updated. Is it necessary to redownload the databases each month/time they are updated and set the warnings all over again or is there an easy update technique?
All opinion/comment/suggestion welcome.

The files simply need to be copied to your UK map folder (takes all of 5 seconds). It's up to you how often you update. I'm not aware of any other way to update the files.

Re: tomtom 510 speed camera warning
Thanks Simon, just got the pocketgps database and install was easy enough although setting up all the warnings individually was a bit of a fag - but i understand that i wont neeed to do this after installing every update.
FWIW the on sereen ikons are IMHO clearer than the Std TT ones.
The file orginisation on the TT is a mess, they need to sort that lot out, no orginisation whatever, everything just dropped into the map folder.
Quite pleased so far but SatNav has a long way to go, its very Heath Robinson, whats on my wish list:
1) More battery life - like 3 weeks the TT510 reminds me of the first mobile phone I had about 12 years ago, good for a day, just about.
2) Why cant they get into bed with Nokia/Motorola/Ericsson (whoever) and use the same battery/charger/connections as mobile phones.
3) Get it to talk to the cars electronics. night view when you swith lights on, shut up when you put indicators on, use car speakers, connect to external antenna. all without connecting a load of seperate wires.
4) Common mount/connections and can we please have something better then a sucker. Why cant they get togather with the car makers and have bracket built in thats easy to remove/hide.

You cannot change the beep to a better noise that will certainly alarm you of a speed trap? Thats odd, seems like if that was a feature TomTom would want you to make the most of it. Hmm...

The good news for those of you with the 510, is that Tomtom are about to release 'Car Connect'. This will become available in the next few weeks.
See here for price/availability.

Re: tomtom 510 speed camera warning
That is a great feature for the 510. When is it going to be available?
