Appreciate where you are both coming from. It's just that I don't really expect an awful lot from the camera on my phone. I can't imagine ever just using a phone to take pictures as opposed to a dedicated camera, and would certainly not favour one phone over another purely on the basis of its camera capabilities. Comes down to what you want on the device, and the camera is quite far down the list for me.

I want a decent user interface, lots of storage memory and processing power, exchange capabilities with MS apps, gpss and primarily internet browsing at good speeds. Being happy with the WM 6.1 option, this phone ticks the right boxes for me over the iPhone and beats the Diamond because of the superior screen size (though not resolution) and expandable memory.

That's why I'm waiting very impatiently for it.

Re: Samsung Omnia SGH-i900

I have to say an important part for me is the camera, I love always having a camera in my pocket, ie when in park with kids etc.

One of my major buying options is the camera part, Im leaning towards the LG secret

I used to have win Mobile phones, I had most of the Orange SPVs, but got bored, never really used all the functions, and never had web browsing on my contract.

This year I want a decent cam, and web pack on, I was tempted with new iPhone, but cam is crap, no vid recording, Bluetooth doesnt work properly.

So looked at LG Secret and like the sound of the half touchscreen/half not idea, its sometimes nice to have keys dont you think? I just wish they also had the web browser as part of the touch apps, seems daft they havent

I looked at the i900 when found out on here, it does look a really great device, but again, maybe not for me.

In that Cam test link, the LG came out top for daylight, and rubbish for night shots, but really there is no phone cam can take good night shots, prob best is what I have now, my SE K810i,

Re: Samsung Omnia SGH-i900

Can I give a bump to Neil's post 11.

I might get the 8 meg version in Singapore in a couple of weeks (the 16 meg is listed here at £100 more and I reckon an 8 meg miniSD must cost less than that)

My problem will then be to get a PAYG sim with cheap 3G data, is such a thing possible. Will the charger work on UK voltage. Any other snags to make the idea impractical?

Thanks

Peter

sorry i didnt see your question...if you get an UNLOCKED phone and then put a sim card in it, it should work here...i think, and yeah 8gb cards are around £30-40 last time i checked and i do believe all the phones from singapore are unlocked

Re: Samsung Omnia SGH-i900

Guys

you can order this phone NOW for UK delivery from:

www.whymobile.com (Singapore website)
or
www.ebay.com.sg

You can also pre-order on www.expansys.com

I did look into this and the HTC Diamond and i was very up for the i900 as i need it for work.... that was, until i actually saw a screen shot of Excel on its screen with its keyboard. Now the MD of Samsung has said that they opted for a low res screen as it saves a lot of battery and processing power. The drawback is that as it has no slide out keyboard, the on-screen keyboard dominated the screen leaving only 4 cells visible in excel! Thats simply rubbish....

for that reason, I am now replacing my G900 (which doesn't have GPS/motion detection) with a HTC Diamond. It may have a smaller screen but it has a beter res (although not as good as my G900) and I will be able to use Excel and Word, which I need frequently for meetings at work.

Shame, I really, really wanted an excuse to buy the i900 as it looks dead good....

edit: Oh I also ordered a flat back, 1800mah battery for the diamond so that cures its two main issues for me

edit2: In response to some of the questions in posts above. SG phones are all legaly required to be unlocked. They (afaik - at least all the ones on Ebay/Whymobile) are all WWE or World Wide English. You are correct that the 8gig is cheaper but then you are limited to a total of 12gig, with the 16 its 20gig (using a 4gig sd)

Re: Samsung Omnia SGH-i900

thanks for the above information...but im still going to wait for it to come out onto contract...

and both 8gb and 16gb versions can take a 16gb sd card, therefore you can have 24 or 32gbs of space on each phone respectively

edit: and im sure you would be able to view the spreadsheet without the keyboard on, and when you want to enter data then the keyboard comes up...

First time I've seen the phone being used by someone who knows how to use it. Looks responsive, and the GPS looks good

Same here. can't wait. This phone will give the iPhone 3G a good run for the money. Since I'm not an O2 customer, this is the nearest thing I can have on a par with the iPhone being an Orange customer.

Re: Samsung Omnia SGH-i900

Does anyone know if there is any way of getting the HTC TouchFlo 3D application onto the Samsung Omnia .. ? If these is remotely possible, never mind this handset being the iPhone killer, it will completely destroy it.

That's only the 8GB though.

18th August is really depressing. I was due to change phones at the beginning of July and now I'm forced to keep my N95 brick even longer.

Re: Samsung Omnia SGH-i900

as i've posted in the past, you have perfectly legit shops in Singapore who will post the 16gb version for far less to you today if you dont want to wait.

www.whymobile.com

is just one of them.

Hey,

The only problem I worry about when buying the phone from abroad is getting stung from Customs!

Customs and warranty would be my worries. The whymobile site says:

"Warranty only applies to Singapore only. Overseas customers can ship damaged phones back and fourth (at own expense) and we will send the phone for servicing at a fee of SGD $20."

If there are problems then it could become very expensive to resolve when a little more patience would provide you with a UK warranty...

.... and a more expensive phone (about £100 last time I looked). But yes, warranty could be an issue.

Re: Samsung Omnia SGH-i900

Any ideas yet about may be porting the HTC TouchFlo 3D theme or something similar to the i900? I for one don't like the WM 6.1 theme, too buggy. Wow... the HTC TouchFlo 3D theme on this handset and nothing out there will even come close.

Re: Samsung Omnia SGH-i900

First off, the omnia has its own Samsung created version of TouchFlo, called "Touchwiz UI".

Second, neither of these replace the "WM 6.1 theme", they sit on top of it much like Word sits on top of Windows Vista. They are an application and not an operating system. So, if there is a bug in WM6.1, its also there in the application i.e TouchFlo ..... although, the application may have a work around built into it.

Finaly, I deliberated long and hard over the Samsung and Touch Diamond and for my own reasons went for the Diamond. Having had the Diamond for a week or so now, I recently de-activated touchflo and went back to just WM. In my experience Touch Flo 3d was a gimmick. It didn't allow me to present all the same information on the "Today" screen that WM did. It also slowed the device down some as well... de-activate it and watch the Diamond FLY!

edit: Actually, also gota say that when not using TouchFlo3D and just using WM, my diamond has been rock solid.

Thanks for the reply.

I know that Samsung have got their version of TouchFlo 3D called "Touchwiz UI", crikey, I've known 'bout the i900 since it was anounced of the 9th of June, I've watched countless videos about it on youtube, the Click on BBC news 24 and even read a preview on Cnet.co.uk I've even downloaded the manual from Samsungmobiles.com. I've been posting my views on the http://www.gsmarena.com/ website for about a month now.And I do know the difference b/w an application and an OS, I just like HTC's solution in making WM 6.1 a bit more user friendly.
