Using Samsung mobile with pacemaker - help

My Dad has just had a CRT pacemaker fitted and we'd like to find out what the electrical output is from his Samsung SGH G600 as it can interfere with the operation of his pacemaker.

Does anyone know how we find out what the output is from a mobile phone in watts?

Thanks, Rossa

Manufacturers normally provided this sort of information in the product specifications. If you've bought the phone check the health and safety section of the user manual. If not, send Samsung customer services an email

Re: Using Samsung mobile with pacemaker - help

Hi Rob,

I've checked all the stuff that came with his phone and the only thing it refers to is Specific Absorption Rate or SAR. We don't know if that refers to the electrical output or the signal transmitted to the receivers & back when the phone is in use. Perhaps someone can tell us.

The SAR limit on his phone is 2.0w/kg which looks like a wattage figure but not sure why it relates to kg which I guess is kilogram.

If this is the output then we're ok as the limit for use with a pacemaker is 3w. Otherwise you are advised to use a headset so that the phone is at a distance from his body.

My knowledge of SAR only goes so far and I wouldn't like to give you a definite answer on something that has such an important impact on your father.

Have a read of the info here on WiKi: Specific absorption rate - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I'm fairly sure SAR is what you're looking for, but I can only suggest getting onto Samsung and asking their advice and clarification.

Re: Using Samsung mobile with pacemaker - help

Thanks Rob. I emailed Samsung's customer service team a couple of days ago but not had an answer yet.

The limit for his type of pacemaker is 3 watts so if it is the SAR output then we're within the tolerance levels.

If all else fails and we can't get a definitive answer I'll advise Dad to use his headset.
