Will I benefit from DVE?

So Ive just bought a Panasonic 42px60, and Im really starting to get into this whole Av stuff, Ive seen the light as such! lol

Now Im still in the running in period of the Tv, but after this is done I really wanna get the best out of it PQ wise, so the question is if I buy this Dve disc will I actually benefit from it? Is it easy to do and will I be able to do it?

I also thought about getting it Isf calibrated but this obviously costs money and alot of it, is this any better than what I could do?

Cheers for your help!

Re: Will I benefit from DVE?

The DVE disk is fairly good, but does take a little bit off getting the hang of it. Its 20 quid or so, I think its good value, the test signals alone are worth 20 quid. If you go for it calibrate some CRT TVs first as it will make it easier to understand as Plasma displays don't show many of the issues which are discussed on the disk. Doing this will mean that you know what to look for, calibrate 3 or 4 CRT TVs from different manufactures first and it will make a lot more sense! Honest!! You will be surprised at the difference!

Re: Will I benefit from DVE?

I ordered the HD version ages ago and it still not here so I would go for the standard version for now.

Dupe...

If i were you i would get the test disc and fiddle about with your settings for brightness, colour, sharpness but do not put contrast above your halfway setting on your tv as it can cause very severe damage to it.This will let you see what the basic adjustments do and will get you a very desent picture. But if you want the very best out of your tv then that is where an isf calibration comes in.Although it is expensive i would say it is well worth the money and then you will know you are getting the best out of your tv something that you will not be able to do with just the test disc alone. You need a colour analyzer to calibrate the tv's greyscale tracking and gamma curve this is where an isf comes in there could be other adjustments that your tv needs as well that you are not aware off that an experienced isf calibrator can do for you.Gordon Fraser on these very forums comes very highly recommended as he has the equipment and the experience

Re: Will I benefit from DVE?

Thanks for the advice people!!

I think I'll try the Dve once my tv is run in and then maybe get an isf calibration, how much roughly would it cost for a Panny 42px60?

You also mention not turning the contrast above 50%, is this just for the run in or all the time?

Re: Will I benefit from DVE?

The problem I find with DVE is I set it up how it suggests, then I find I'm not happy with the image when watching movies etc and have to start adjusting it to my own eyes. I guess I just don't like the images I get when my LCD is set correctly !

Did You take a look to TestDVD from this link?

www.merifon.3000.it

It doesn't pretend to compete with DVE but it's free...

Re: Will I benefit from DVE?

I've just uploaded a small mpeg2 video file with 4 testcards on it (3 are 16/9)

It's only a short clip of each card but might be useful but not anywhere as elaborate as merifon's !

You can use this file and make a DVD easily, as each clip is 10 seconds long you need to ideally split the one video clip and have 4 video files, then copy/paste to make a nice long clip for each card then burn to DVD> I've done this successfully with Pinnacle studio 9 and I'm sure other editing programs should do just fine.

The quality looks a lot better on a CRT than a PC monitor, not sure how it looks on plasma or lcd though.
