I'm sorry......another (simple I hope) speaker placement question

I'm trying to sort out my surround sound set-up.
It's in a nice square room, and at the moment the rear speakers are the only ones I haven't connected yet.
I put up the 2 front speakers on the "side" walls facing the viewing/listening position.
They are about 140cm from the each side of the TV, and about 190cm from the centre speaker.
But a neighbour was around today and he said that they shouldn't be so far out and he suggested they should be placed 40cm from the sides of the TV, 80cm from the centre speaker.

Is he right???

(because of shelving I have on the same wall as the TV, they have to go in one of these positions, there's no in between!!!)

The drawing Matt linked shows the preferred way to set up the speakers. My only comment is that drawing doesn't make it clear enough that you should avoid putting the listening position near the halfway point front to back in the room. That's where the deepest bass nulls occur. The ideal place is about 38 percent of the way into the room measured from either the front or rear wall. The drawing below shows this in context.

Thanks.
It appears he's more right than I am.
I have the front speakers positioned about where the rear ones are in that diagram. Except at the front obviously, LOL.
