Which DVE disc do you guys use?

Hi everyone.

I am going to buy one of the DVE calibration discs for my plasma & surround system but I'm not sure which to go for.

www.play.com have the UK version which is PAL and apparently has a Dolby Digital 5.1 track here.

www.playusa.com have the American version which is NTSC and apparently mastered from a 1080p source and includes DTS 6.1 here.

My question is, which would you go for? Are they basically the same product but just with different descriptions?

I want to get the best one for my screen (see my signature). If it means getting both for optimal settings in both NTSC & PAL, then I may just have to do that.

But before I buy (I'm more tempted by the NTSC version to be honest) I'd like to hear the opinions of anyone who has used either disc.

Thanks!

Re: Which DVE disc do you guys use?

At the risk of making a complete arse of myself i'd say that the Pal version is 25 fps 480i & the NTSC 30 fps 576i. But I may be completely wrong!.

please see below for confirmation.

Re: Which DVE disc do you guys use?

I have the UK PAL version and have used it with my PDP-506XDE and it made quite a good job of the picture after my running in period.

I checked the contents and it includes DTS 6.1 test signals as well.

You might be able to get it cheaper here

Re: Which DVE disc do you guys use?

The PAL version of DVE was totally remastered to work with our 50Hz 576 line system and so would be the obvious choice for most people. If you have many NTSC DVDs it may be worth picking up the NTSC version as well.

Ufitsy - wrong way round there mate!

Pal = 50Hz 576 lines (25fps for movies)
NTSC = 60Hz 480 lines (24fps for movies)

Re: Which DVE disc do you guys use?

PAL and NTSC also use a different black level setting, so you will find on your analogue connections that setting the black level for one will be different for the other. If you use R1 and R2 disks and aren't using digital connections, you may need to get both disks. You may also find there are limitations on your displays that may not allow automatic switching between the two, so you will have to use two different memory positions and remember to switch between them when watching R1 and R2 material.

Re: Which DVE disc do you guys use?

Thanks for your help guys. I've gone with the PAL version from Amazon Jersey for £11.99 for the time being.

If I feel I need the NTSC version at a later date I'll get that too...
