speaker delay set up

Just reading in What HiFi about setting up the delay for the speakers. They say measure from the seating position to the front left speaker, and then to the rear left speaker. For every 150cm difference add 5ms delay....

does the delay go on the front or rear speaker though? - sorry for being a dumb ass!

Re: speaker delay set up

Hi there,

Speaker delays are usualy for all but the Front Main pair of speaker (or Normal Stereo pair) as these are considered the reference from which the delay is taken. Having delay on these would be nonsensical, save in lipsych errors. though that is typicaly a different setting.

IIRC at the speed of sound 1ms of delay equals 30cm/12" which would be the same as 150cm = 5ms so its 'sounds' about right.

cya,
Lee

Re: speaker delay set up

That's plain wrong.
On both my Yam 557 and Denon 3803, you can set the delay on all speakers.
It even asks the distance for all speakers in the basic setup.

Re: speaker delay set up

amps from the last few years usually prefer you to set a delay for each speaker going on distance from seating position.....

however some older amps had it as a setting for the rear speakers jointly from the front speakers......my old Sherwood does it like that....

so i guess it depends on the amp...

badger mate, tomorrow the rather large rosewood finished eagle lands

Re: speaker delay set up

Alaric,
My apologies.
I've made you look a bit of a mug, when you are slightly correct.
You probably know this already, but for anyone else, I'll explain.

The picture travels from the telly at the speed of light, so we can generally take it that the pic hits you instantaneously.
The sound will take longer, hence the reason for having a delay setting for each speaker.
Also remember, not all front speakers are the same distance from the listener, hence another good reason for individual delay.

Of course, If you're only listening to music, it doesn't matter (assuming the fronts are at equal distance) as you correctly said
In this case it can be considered as zero, if you're using stereo only.
But if listening to surround music and the rears are closer, you would need delay, as the rear sound will hit you quicker. That begs the question, if your fronts are say, 5m away and your rears are 2m away, what do you set the rear delay at?
I know the answer, but I'm sure it's easier to use the actual measurements

KB,
I've been watching mate, no worries.
I await your opinions

Re: speaker delay set up

thanks for the replies. My rerar speakers are a lot closer to my seated position than the fronts, so am I right in thinking I need to set some delay on the rears then? (ive not actually measured anything yet!)

Re: speaker delay set up

Definitely.
Although you may not even notice the difference, it may help with back to front panning.

Re: speaker delay set up

Hi There,

Curious...And i can see the thinking.

Admitedly my Yamaha AX1 is an older amp and my prior amps have never had a feature to delay the fronts. Looking on the Nvidia decoder, there are just rears and centre.

It also depends if its for movie or music use as SACD/DVD-A have a circular set-up where any speaker can be the master.

I guess the correct answer is the usual one of read the manual and adjust per the manufactures instructions

cya,
Lee
