My L + R Speaker positioning query.

Right, I've ordered the Sony KDL-46X2000, couldn't wait any longer for the 40" X series. The only problem now is that I can't have my L + R speakers by the side of the TV since there is no space. I would have to mount it above the TV. Do you think acoustically this may cause a problem with my 5.1 setup? Here is a diagram of how it would look.

Re: My L + R Speaker positioning query.

I was under the impression that the L/R tweaters should be a listeners ear level, and in line with the centre speaker for realistic surround panning / playback.

However, depending on your amp it may compensate via auto calibration, but without directional speakers like the YSPs then I don't think so...

My Amp Denon 2106 does have auto calibrarion with a setup mic. Also the I can tilt the speakers with the brackets I have. May be tilt the speakers down a bit and re-run the auti calib?

Re: My L + R Speaker positioning query.

In the ideal world you would have the front three speakers running along a symmetrical horizontal axis.

This means that if you imagine a line through the centre of the centre (ahem..) and project it out to the sides the left and right speakers drivers should be centred around that line.

The drawing you put up looks like it would ok given there is no other option. Try and tilt the speakers down a little if they above seated head height and then re run the auto calibration.

Re: My L + R Speaker positioning query.

Acoustically - the tweeters should be lined up, not the centre of the whole speaker.

Aesthetically - whatever you please, in fact turning the L+R 90 degrees might kill two birds.

It's hard to tell from the diagram cos that surely isnt to scale, and will depend on the quality of the L/R versus C speakers, but if your L+R are that close, a centre speaker is unnecessary anyway IMO...

I think you need to tell us what speakers these are and the distances apart..
