Rear Projection Calibration

Can anybody give me the name of a good rear projection setup specialist in the Essex area?

Sorry to say mate that there is none!,I've had 3 toshiba 40who8 tv's reason being that there are no local companys able or willing.
To put them self's out and go on a training course


I got my 3rd set on saturday and basiclly because it was droped out side my front door and banged in my hallway it's no longer on spec

I really hope its not tosh because there aftersales service is very poor?
I managed to get 3 phone numbers yesterday from them for local companys able to get the set back to spec or so i was told the first company in hockley would not touch the set?.

And the second would not repair a rptv set but basically toshiba said they could i've been back in touch with tosh today and they are sending out an engineer from suffolk and if the company are anygood i'll let you know.
And by the way the other service company reconmended by toshiba messed up my second set which they had for 4 weeks

I just hope that this improves as i think it was the purchase i've made and by the way the nearest toshiba superscreen service centre is in ipswich.

Thanks for the reply.I would be interested to know how you get on with the other company.I live just up the road from you in Benfleet.It seems there's a lack of quality engineers about,I,ve scanned the net and can't find any.We must be about 10 years behind the states in this area.Good luck with your set and mine is a sony not a tosh.

Hey guys. What sort of calibration are you after?

I've just finished my ISF training and am still in North America on holiday. ISF calibrations do not as a rule include geometry and convergence on rear projection sets unless you want to pay more and are happy to have the warranty invalidated on your set. Even over here, where they have quite a few calibrators, the manufacturers consider anything more than colour and greyscale calibration to be enough to invalidate warranties.

Just curious as I may offer my service for these type of sets if there's enough demand.

I am not familier with your unit but I can give you some advice for free.....

If your's is a CRT rear projector and it is quite shallow in depth then you will find the red and blue fringing at either side will be standard across the range. This is due to the different distance the light has to travel from the closest part of the screen to the furthest away edge of the screen from the outside red and blue guns.

If they were moved further back to make the unit deeper you wouldn't have such a disparity between the distance from the red gun to the outside edge and inside edge of the screen so you would get a more uniform brightness across the screen. The same for the blue obviously. Just think how a torch gets less bright the further away from a wall you move it. Same thing happening here.

Geometry and convergence can be fixed in service modes if you know what you are doing. Colour and greyscale can be fixed with the use of the proper test equipment. You may find that after these are all fixed the red/blue fringing isn't quite so apparent, although it will still be there.

Hope this is of some benefit anyway.

Hi Gordon
This may sound daft but i'm not sure whats needed.I have some blue colour patches (top and bottom left),a small redish tinge on the right and a slight bend in the picture top left.All these problems are very small but i can see them.I just thought if there are small problems then maybe it would benefit from a complete setup ie; focus,convergence,geometry,colour scale etc.
