Absorbsion/refraction idea

Am planning on making some acoustic panels for the home cinema, but rather than just glue acoustic tiles to the walls I thought I'd add in a bit of refraction by building a matrix to contain a mix of acoustic tiles and random sized blocks of wood.

Sound hitting the panel will be partially absorbed and partially reflected/refracted. What do you chaps recon? Good idea or not?

Your talking about diffusion?

'Professional' diffusing panels should be designed using acoutsit (scientific/mathmetical) principles

sure you could DIY them and they might work great but... they might not.

DIY Diffusers

some would argue that anything is better than a flat wall. If your willing to experiment then why not but this isnt the sort of thing I would have thought you would 'get lucky' with IMHO

Its all about experimentation, i wont be covering the panels until i have run a good few sweeps with REW so i can swap stuff around. My room will have little diffusion without some sharp edges so thought this would add a bit into the mix.

maybe with the wedges in diaganol squares and some diffusion in the others...
