Urgent advice needed on setup layout

Hi guys, doing this as a request for my brother. Basically he isnt sure where to have his sofa situated in his living room, its abit of an awkward shape with where the door is.

Also he doesnt know where to have the rear speakers situated, far back corners? or would this be too far with where the sofa is placed on the diagram? Also would 13ft be considered too far to view a 52"? he's not got the best of eyesight!

Any help advice appreciated please guys

Re: Urgent advice needed on setup layout

Looks pretty good as it is to me. A lot of space wasted in the middle of the room otherwise and the dining table at the back of the room seems like a good use of space.

Plenty of room behind the sofa for rear / side speakers. I would guess that you can have them as far back as you like, as long as you run the setup / tweak them so they're loud enough?

Re: Urgent advice needed on setup layout

would he have to have his rear speakers immediately behind the sofa or could they go in the rear corners of the room, this would be quite a distance to the sofa though

where abouts? on the walls either side of the sofa but slightly behind? if the speakers were on stands either side of the sofa how would he avoid having cable running ontop of the carpet to them!?

Re: Urgent advice needed on setup layout

Are you talking about surround speakers (as in 5.1 setup) or the rear speakers (as in 7.1 setup)?

SURROUND speakers are normally placed either side of the listening position about 2m up (depending on type of speaker that is).

REAR speakers are in addition to surround speakers and normally placed behind the listening position

Re: Urgent advice needed on setup layout

he's got a quad lite 2 set as well as 2 additional floorstanders so theoretically he could have a 7.1 setup but said he only wants to go 5.1

So best place would be on stands behind either side of the sofa, but then the question that beckons is how woul he hide the cable going to the speaker stands if the are in the room ie not next to the wall but nearer the centre of the room

If he only wants to go 5.1 then he will be using SURROUND speakers which need to go either side of the listening position which I am assuming is the 3 seater sofa facing the tv and not behind.

I understand you now ! lol

so if he wanted the 7.1 the rears COULD go rite in the back corners of the room, just keep the surrounds either side of the sofa (3seater)

Re: Urgent advice needed on setup layout

If he sets it up as a 7.1, would he be able to ''switch'' the rears off sometimes and run it as a 5.1? or is this going to be tons of hassle?

Main reason being not to drive the neighbours insane! as the rear 7.1 speakers would be on the joining wall (even though its been soundproofed)

That sounds like a lot of hassle to me and it would also depend on if he uses a receiver / amp that runs an auto set-up.

Best advise I would give is stick to 5.1 and consider getting some tri-pole speakers for the surrounds (this is just my advice though). These made a massive difference to my set-up.
