Getting the best out of my 5.1?

Hi all,

Could someone offer me some advise on my current speaker placement.

I am mostly concerned about the impact that the rear speakers have on the overall soundstage.

This is how I currently have my system setup,

Distance
Center (3.0m) away from listening position
Fronts (3.1m) Left and Right for listening position
Rears (1.0m) from listening position

I have measured the speakers and put the distances in my amp, however my Rears are actually closer than 1.0m but that is the lowest figure.

Speaker Levels
Center -2 (try and give the fronts the same volume)
Rears -5 (tone down the rears to avoid that being all I hear)

I have done this by ear on a test tone.

I have the Rears slightly behind toed into my ears a couple of inches above ear level, the front Left and Right speakers are toed into my listening position and the center is also central. I have also put some little feet under all three front speakers so that they are pointed upwards towards the ears.

I'm not sure whether to try and wall mount the rears above the door to the left of the seating position and on the wall to the right, either face them down towards the listening position or straight across, some combination.

The reason being that surely if I am 3 Meters away from the front and less than one away from the rears, even when turned down and distances measured, they are always going to either sound too low or make me miss sounds from the front.

I have set the distances and the sound levels best I can, however I am just wondering if I currently have a borked setup in regards to overall soundstage due to the proximity to the rears?

Thanks in advance if anyone has any advise, and sorry about the image quality

those rears are way to close, id move them out to the corners, no real science behind that, just personal preference.

I think the only option is for me to put them on the wall as I think you are suggesting. Now to convince the GF thats what needs to happen.

Re: Getting the best out of my 5.1?

I have now placed into the room corners, as shown in the picture.

Not sure whether I should have them point downwards or not, at the moment they point downwards and towards my ears.

Just got to chog out for the wires now and then bingo bango.

Re: Getting the best out of my 5.1?

I have been looking around the web since yesterday with regards to finding out if the speakers should face down towards the listener or just be toed in a little and fire straight across.

Would I be right in assuming that if I toe them in and then fire straight across that this will be good for ambient sound and give that sort of, whoa where is it coming from sort of effect?

Then by tilting the speakers down towards the listening position I will get more of a directional sound as they shoot more towards my ears.

I play alot of games on my system so directional sound is a plus but I don't want to bork it now.

tweeters are much more directional than woofers, so pointing them at you gets the sound to you, best bet is to experiment for the position that you want them and see what gives you the best sound

Just want to make sure i'm not missing out on anything by having the speakers facing down towards the listener.

Sounds great, I may try them facing towards each other, however seems pretty good atm
