Mic Amp for Behringer ECM 8000

Hi,

I have a mic from an SMS-1 which I am pretty certain is the Behringer ECM8000. I would like to use it with REW to give a more accurate plot than my RS SPL Meter. This is mostly for subwoofer setup but I may also use it to test/measure other speakers etc.

Can you suggest a Mic Amp 'Good Enough' for this application. I don't want to spend a fortune if it isn't necessary but if I am going for a more accurate result it needs to do the job.

I have been considering the M-Audio Mobile-Pre but it is quite a bit of money and as I already have a soundcard on my motherboard it seems a bit OTT. However if I am to be convinced this is the way to go I don't mind putting my hand in my pocket.

Thanks,

Adam

xenyx 802 seemed to be the usual recommendation when I last looked - there's a few one ebay right now between £10 and £35 from a quick look

Re: Mic Amp for Behringer ECM 8000

might be if you can switch this off

dedicated Low Cut filter eliminates unwanted noise, e.g. floor rumble

Re: Mic Amp for Behringer ECM 8000

Thanks Ian, I had hoped for something with a few less knobs to keep me out of trouble but if that is the kiddie I'll take a look.

Re: Mic Amp for Behringer ECM 8000

This looks like the sort of simplicity I was hoping for but is it any good/right for the job?

M-AUDIO - Fast Track USB - Record Guitar and Vocals on Your Computer—Complete with Effects

Thanks,

Re: Mic Amp for Behringer ECM 8000

this is what i use:

Behringer Micropower PS400 | Dolphin Music

linked in with Laptop and USB soundcard, chuffing expensive measurement software as well as cheaper, depending on if im doing a room or a large hall.

That gets me part way there but I still need a RCA or mini jack to XLR adapter and would be feeding with an unbalanced input. Would that be ok?

Re: Mic Amp for Behringer ECM 8000

I plug in to the usb soundcard, with an adaptor to knock it down to small size, the software I use figures out what the input in is and sorts itself out accordingly, i could plug in more if i wanted and it would work it out. You should be the same, cable out from power goes to input on soundcard

Re: Mic Amp for Behringer ECM 8000

Blue Microphones Icicle | Dolphin Music

£50 for an all-in-one solution (mic pre to USB with phantom)

Only 1 channel though, so you can't do real frequency response measuring with it, but I don't think REW does that anyway.

Re: Mic Amp for Behringer ECM 8000

Most of the solutions suggested are coming in around £60-75 so I am wondering about going the whole hog and getting either of these two but hope someone can clarify:

M-AUDIO - MobilePre USB - USB Bus-Powered Preamp and Audio Interface
This has a built in Soundcard as well as Mic Pre-Amp?

Tascam US-122L, - Online Music Store | Sounds Live
Tascam US122
No built in Soundcard, just a USB powered Pre-Amp?

I like the idea of USB power as it is one less plug and means I can go mobile with it but if it has no Soundcard built in and my laptop has no line in/out does that stuff me anyway?

The cheaper option is the Behringer XENYX 802 but it just seems way to complex for my needs and the XLR in the top would be a pain as I would place it in my Rack/Cupboard whilst in use.

The Tascam seems the simplest and best laid out for me but will it do what I need?

Thanks for your patience.

Adam
