help with SPL meter please

hi chaps,

its my 6monthly re-calibration time so i have 1 question. I've heard people say when using a SPL meter to have it pointing directly toward the roof and others say on an angle towards where the roof meets the wall which of these is correct/true and why ?

thanks guys,
Mike.

Re: help with SPL meter please

Its down to the directivity of the microphone and the meter itself. Pointing straight up means that the pick-up pattern in the horizontal plane will be omni-directional, in the vertical plane it will be slightly cardioid due to the physical size of the mic and meter. Therefore as the majority of sound comes in direct from the speakers you point it straight up....

Dupe...

Re: help with SPL meter please

To get a true reading it will really help you to fix it to a tripod or if you do not have one tape it to a chair or something.

If you just hold the SPL meter in your hand you will get huge discrepancies in the readings.

I had loads of issues with calibrating my system until I was told this. I point my SPL meter straight up by the way.

The guide I used stated that the meter should be pointed at an angle upwards to where the front wall meets the ceiling.
