Positioning of rear speakers and setting up of speaker distances etc

I am in the middle of trying to sort out my tv room. I have a flat screen tv and CA 640r Amp with a 5.1 setup.

I have mounted the front speakers which are at the front of the room in the usual space.

My tv is in the corner of the room as I cannot put it in the bay window area due to a air con unit being in this area also.

QUestion is I am not sure where to put my rear speakers? THe book for the amp says to mount them just above head height but I have read on here that its best to mount them 3 or 4 foot above the head so they are less obvious when producing sound effects.

Currently setup is that one speaker is sat on a shelf about 1 ft above head height when seated and the other is sat on another shelf at about head height when seated and when watching a movie you can tell exactly where the sounds are coming from for the surround, because the sound is coming directly from the speaker.

The local cinema (showcase) seems to have its surround speakers mounted way above head height and you cant really tell where the sound is coming from when watching a movie? So am I best off mounting them at 3/4 foot above head height?

My sofa is on the back wall and cannot be moved any further forward so currently the speakers are at the same level as the sofa arms if that makes sense.

I am not sure what to do really.

Also when setting the amp up for a corner tv configuration what do you do with regards to distances when you can only use the same distance for each set of speakers.

I.e back left speaker is 2mtrs from seating position and back right speaker is 1.5mtrs from seating position due to placement of sofa and entrance door into the room?

Any advice appreciated.

Regards
Richard.

Re: Positioning of rear speakers and setting up of speaker distances etc

Rear channel sound is supposed to be diffused sound, ie not a focused pin point sound, why?/ We would be too distracted from the sound and be looking to see where it comes from..

Bipolar Speakers Definition - What is a Bipolar Speaker

Good info here..
It all sums up that you should not be able to ascertain from where the rears are coming from...

Hope this helps..

Re: Positioning of rear speakers and setting up of speaker distances etc

U see that does make sense to me.

I am using Eltax Monitor III's as my rear speakers so I guess they are more directional as they are made for hi fi I guess but I cant afford to buy anything more at the moment so I will have to make do.

They were pointing towards listening position before so I may try pointing them away from the listening position to break up the directional line of sound they produce. Ideally they would be better up on the wall.

Cant find any stands for these speakers though.
