California Games

Anyone remember California Games on the C64? I read a while back that a company was doing a re-make of this for the PSP. It was due out some time ago but all went quiet. Did anyone hear what happened to it? The same company was going to do The Last Ninja PSP as well.

Re: California Games

Epyx made some sterling stuff back then, summer games 1 and 2, winter games and world games were good too along with the classic impossible mission and the eidolon etc.

Though in my mind news of a last ninja remake is even better, my love for the 2 original c64 games is well known (never bothered with 3 though) shame it's on psp only as it would make a cracking title on any format, i opened a tribute thread to it a good while ago :-

Tribute to the last ninja series (system 3)

Re: California Games

Great game, brings back memories - especially that game with the beansack type thing doing kickups.. and the bmx..

Was this not part of the same lot that made summer games - similar to olympic gold but with about 75 different events?!

Re: California Games

I loved California games back in the day.

Remember playing it to death on the Sega Master System, still got it on my Sepctrum as well

I loved the Hacky Sack & Surfing Events the most, so much fun simple & totally addictive.

Re: California Games

Wow, I had this on Atari ST. So many hours lost playing this. The Hacky Sack thing was great fun, I seem to remember you could hit passing birds for extra points?

Re: California Games

Hardly ever did well at surfing but loved trying anyway. Hackysack was great! Good memory there evangelink about hitting the seagulls. Halfpipe skateboard was alright for a laugh too. These were great games to play with a room full of mates. Could get bragging rights for top scores/world records!

I also preferred World Games and Winter Games to both the Summer Games. The log rolling was brilliant in World Games and the biathlon/hot dog were my favourites in Winter.

My mate had these games on 5.25" disk. What decadence to be able to load the next event up in a matter of a minute or two lol.

Re: California Games

Sometimes funny the memories that come back reading these threads.

I had all the Epyx sports games, but mainly played Summer Games 1&2 which I had on disk. Aside from the quicker loading times and being able to join both games together, the big advantage of the disk version was that it permanently saved (and displayed) your world records.

My mum used to play games on the C64 back then and Summer Games was one of her favourites. She started a game one day when I was at school and decided to set up a two-player game and compete against herself. For some bizarre reason, when asked to type in Player 2's name she input the name of my primary school teacher.

Naturally she then went and broke one of the world records with "Mrs Eaglesham"!! I then had to spend days trying to beat it myself so that my friends wouldn't think I'd been inviting my teacher home to play me at Summer Games!

Edit: actually thinking back, it was "Mrs E" she typed as you only had 8 characters, but all my school pals knew who Mrs E was!

Re: California Games

LMAO brilliant!

I wonder if other people of similar retro age had parents that played games. My folks hardly ever. My mum played Space Invaders in the arcades (around 1980) twice because I nagged her. My dad played Pacman on the BBC Micro once or twice but stopped when I beat his score. Recently I got my dad to try Burnout Paradise on the PS3 and he drove the speed limit everywhere lol. My mum has a DS Lite but her idea of gaming is Brain Trainer. My dad will play Solitaire at a push hehe.

Will we be the first generation to be playing games in nursing homes? lol
