Any SNES owners out there?

I never owned a SNES back in the day but a friend of mine did. It's one of the few consoles I might consider buying that I never owned. First of all, what is a reasonable price to buy one generally? Secondly what are the best games for it. I remember a few but probably missed out on some classics. I like games going back to late 70s pong so anything is fine with me if it is interesting or fun. Thanks

P.s. What accessories should I get with it? Two controllers? Anything useful? Not sure on when I'll buy one due to cash but want to think about it.

Re: Any SNES owners out there?

Was a great machine with plenty of all time classic titles, they hold their price pretty well too, good for selling but a bit rough when you're trying to pick one up, anyway on the games front have a gander :-

Snes best game ever Here

And quite a few titles made it into our (as voted for) resource thread with more in depth info on the titles that made it :-

Good luck!

Re: Any SNES owners out there?

This is quite possibly the greatest machine ever made & worthy of a place in everyones collection
I still play mine on an almost weekly basis.

Right to answer the questions you need...

Either a modified pal machine or an Impoted japanese Super Famicom so you can have full 60Hz playback & also access to all region games.

2 controllers are a must although if you get Bomberman then you MUST have a multitap & 4 controllers (drunken 4 player bomberman is the most fun ever)

Also a good quality Scart Cable will be a must to as RGB is stunning for this beauty...look for a Gamecube one as they will fit the SNES too.

Lastly get it hooked to an AMP as well for some amazing soundtracks played as they were intended oh & please tell me you'll be using on a CRT set? (SNES can look awful on LCD)

Now the games...oh baby your in for a treat if you like your platformers
The must haves IMO...

Adventures of Batman & Robin
Contra III: The Alien Wars (Probotector in the UK)
Castlevania IV
Mario All Stars
Super Star Wars
Super Empire Strikes Back
Super Return of the Jedi
Batman Returns
Mario Kart
Mario World
Yoshis Island
Pilot Wings
Actraiser
Sensible World of Soccer
Street Fighter 2 Turbo
Shadowrun
Secret of Mana
Sercret of Evermore
Super Metroid
UN Squadron
Axelay
Smash TV
Bomberman
Parodius
R-Type
Maximum Carnage
Zelda: Link to the Past
Super Aleste
Unirally
Starfox
Donkey Kong Country
Killer Instinct
Ultimate Mortal Kombat
Cybernator (Assualt Suit Lynos)

The list really is endless so many real gems out there but those are the ones curently in my collection & all still get regular play time.

Happy gaming & welcome to the SNES fold

Re: Any SNES owners out there?

Amazing replies, thanks! I am going to re-visit this when I am buying my SNES. I love Bomberman on the Megadrive so I will try and get a multitap and 4 controllers as you say. That'll be great fun! (and kinda funny that as a retro gamer I'm doing this for the first time)

I will be using it on a CRT set. I don't have the money for an LCD and I'm such a grumpy old retro bugger that I may never buy one.

Platformers are probably my favourite genre. Although it has to be said I'm possibly the worst gamer in history. I look forward to posting more here as I get stuck in to some of the classics.

Re: Any SNES owners out there?

im the same as u never owned a snes untill a few months ago. it was a funny story i went to this classified advert to buy a dreamcast cos mine broke and got chatting to this man who was a bit wierd lol and ended up not only leaving with loads of dreamcast items but also a mint boxed mastersystem and snes. so basically i payed an extra £10 for the mastersystem and bargained with him for the snes to be thrown in. i have seen boxed super mario snes consoles go for about £20 so anything around that seems good. anouther thing to watch out for is the controllers at £15 to replace one make sure you get at least two bundled with the snes the buttons might also be faulty i was crafty my controller was fooked so i bought anouther faulty one and found a site where they sell the rubbers to replace the faulty ones so ended up saving a fortune and ended up with two controllers. (NEW Rubber Parts for Official SNES Controllers Joy Pads on eBay (end time 28-Oct-09 12:52:54 GMT))
ebay has the parts in two sets now for a bargain price. anyway good luck finding a snes console
p.s. do not pay ebay prices search local papers under classified ads and also carboots are good never found one after 15 years looking but have improved my n64 collection to great extent and luckily found someone who had no clue what he was selling and bought his whole stand which included very rare n64 controller and boxed mint cond nes

Re: Any SNES owners out there?

Thanks Groppo. That's some good advice especially about repairing the controllers. Apart from my Spectrum which had some faulty keys (I bought a second broken Spectrum cheaply and swapped the keyboard over), I have been lucky with purchases at car boots or Ebay.

Although I nearly bought a PS3 game at a car boot recently that looked too good to be true. When I saw the blu-ray had a massive crack in it like it had been hit with a hammer, the man said "it should still work mate".

I think after SNES I might look at some kind of NEO GEO console. I know very little about these (less than SNES!) and haven't researched them but a friend had one in the early 90s. We used to have fun playing sports games, football and baseball in particular.

Re: Any SNES owners out there?

i was always a huge sega fan only cos it was cheaper then nintendo but all my cuz's had snes's i then bought n64 which in my opinion was the greatest consoles ever made and will never be repeated then sega stoped and i enjoyed my n64 since then along with the GC PS2 Xbox 360 (couldnt stand original xbox) got my wii last year but sadly doesnt get the useage it deservs mario 64 and zelda was two of the greatest games of my youth but wii seemed to have got it right again with mario galaxy and twilight princess love them games to bits sadly my n64 looks like crap on 1080 lcd tv's so i never play it anymore snes however still looks awsum if u use a gamecube tv cable i can even get awsum picture from my nes just dunno why n64 isnt right. good luck finding one iv missed carboots for a few years since im always working weekends but made quite a profit from bargains my policy is buy anything n64 related £2-£4 max keep them try and get hold of a console some man at the carboot i went to was forced by his future wife to sell his collection he had no clue what it was worth he just said its old and he would rather keep it but cant i then made a £5 offer he then tried throwing a tv in for an extra £2 but i didnt want the tv lol anyway got home from a good day and listed the console with all these cheap games i collected on ebay expecting to make about £20 but couldnt believe how much they went for i made all my money back from that one day at the carboot (spent about £65 on 2 n64's and a nes with about 40 mixed games) im a collector so kept the nes back to the n64 i think i got £80 i thought someone was jokeing but then the money arrived into my paypal acount all i know is that someone was ripped off and i made £65

Re: Any SNES owners out there?

I'm a huge snes fan i simply cannot stop going back to all my favourites and playing alot more with the excellent emulator on the pc which really gives the graphics a nice boost.

It dont get much better than super star wars for me aswell as the greatest adventure game ever Zelda: A link to the past. The list goes on and on. I'm off for a game now actually.

P.s also i bought a usb snes controller converter from ebay which worlk a treat.

Re: Any SNES owners out there?

Aw man i really really want a SNES! I unfortunatley was only born in 1986 so i never owned one and ive never even played one but i never hear anybody say 'oh yea the SNES was alright' its always that they are an amazing console!

Seen one recentley in a local games shop for £30 with one pad and that was it which wouldnt of been to bad but the colours had faded and started turning yellow-ish!
