Nippy's new retro collection

Hi folks,

I'm new to the forum and to Retro console gaming too, so seeing as I've been doing up my spare room to play old games in over the last few weeks (as well as my lounge with some new AV gear, but that will be a a seperate post) I thought I'd pop up a few pics of where I'm at so far!

My gaming room; it's fairly small, so I went for quite a tall, fairly narrow unit to house the consoles I've been picking up. I bought a Vivanco SBX99 scart switcher on eBay, which I am really pleased with performance-wise. In terms of systems, at the moment I have: PS2, SNES, Dreamcast, Atari 2600 Woody, and an N64.

I put some 'Dioder' lighting from IKEA in the compartments that are housing consoles, just because I thought it would look nice

I picked up this old Sony KV-21LS30 CRT cheap on eBay, unfortunately the paint was quite chipped so I gave it a re-spray.

My games live here! I've got a bit of a paltry selection at the moment, and will be scouring car boots and charity shops for some more.

So that's me for the moment. I'd love to add a Neo Geo AES to my collection, and ultimately I'd like a good selection of boxed games for all my systems - but i suppose i all takes time. Will keep this updated if/when I make any exciting acquisitions!

Looks great dude. Even the colour of the room looks retro . Any plans to stick a megadrive in there ? even a 3DO or Amiga ?

Thanks! Actually I would really like to add a Megadrive as well. I have an Amiga 1200 in storage (and some games in my loft) but I'm not sure if I can fit it in!

Cheers! The Dioder packs from IKEA come in two varieties - strip and spot. I got the spotlights, and just attached the m with the sticky holders that come with the pack to the bottom centre of 4 shelves (you get 4 lights in pack) I drilled a small hole at the back of each shelf for the wire to pass out, and the transformer plugs into a multisocket under the cabinet.

The nicest thing with these lights is that they can be set to one colour, or to fade between 7 (I think) different colours.

Re: Nippy's new retro collection

Awesome, I'd love to my own room to collect and play games.

Is the CRT a better choice for this purpose?

Re: Nippy's new retro collection

Looks great Nippy! I've still got some retro consoles (MD, Saturn, DC) in the loft with a load of games but no longer have the room to have a dedicated gaming room now.

Look forward to seeing how the thread develops as you add to your collection .

Oh and generally (in response to Cas398), a CRT is good for older consoles if only because you can play light gun games on them. They also display the lower res graphics better than say a big flat panel. That said, if I wasn't bothered about light gun games then i'd probably just stick a 32" LCD on the wall and use that (especially in a room like Nippy's where space is of a premium).

Yeah that's why I was asking because that wall looks made for it. I'd probably stick up anyway and connect a Xbox/PS2 + to it. Definitely keep the CRT for light gun games which I miss so much.

Ah your so lucky having your own gaming room

Re: Nippy's new retro collection

Thanks guys! I picked up the Sony CRT after reading a lot about people's gripes with retro console display on LCD screens, plus it was dead cheap! That said, I may well try out an LCD at some point, as the space saved would be a big bonus.

Picked up a Mega Drive 2 with Mega CD and a bunch of games the other day, so will update picks once its all hooked up

Of course you can, you just need the mega cd 1 to go along with it too!

I used to own one of these and must say it looked awesome, much better than the mega cd 2, though sadly the games left a lot to be desired.

Grab yourself a snes instead, much better selection of of superb games.
