A couple of my Candy Cabs - a work in progress

Well, as promised, here's a pic of my new Egret 2 cab. Also, my newly acquired New Astro City...

I also have one of these...

so pictures will follow of that! I'm weighing up how many I want for the collection - 3 or 4 at the moment! I will probably sell my Sega Naomi and there is a chance the Nintendo Playchoice-10 may find it's way to a new home - but this hasn't been decided yet!

With the new cabs, the problem is none of them work atm! I'm in the process of sorting them out so hopefully they'll up and running soon. Egret 2's PSU died when I got it home so that needs to be replaced and the New Astro City and the Astro City both need a fair bit of work but hopefully nothing that will be beyond me. All are complete so ignore anything missing in the photos - that's just because I've been working on them! Overall, I'm pleased but I will be far more pleased once I have them up and running and nice and clean!

It would kill me looking at a CRT screen.

Re: A couple of my Candy Cabs - a work in progress

There is no other way to play arcade games!

Play them on a LCD and they look dire! It's like linking up a Mega Drive or SNES to a LCD TV - it looks terrible but is a thing of beauty once you revert back to CRTs!

For all the technical advances in gaming, I still would play games from the 'golden era' of the 80s and 90s over anything PS1 onwards.

Yeah I was only joking buddy.

I still have my Snes and had it hooked up to an old CRT but when that died I felt empty inside, picked up a cheap one off Ebay and then that went wrong within 3months so just have it hooked up to the LCD.

Doesn't feel the same, and I love going on Mario & Mario Kart for some old school gaming.

Those setups you have look real sweet, if I had the room and know how, I would look to get one for the office room for those moments where you just need to relax and think of the good old days

Re: A couple of my Candy Cabs - a work in progress

Haha, I know you were! I can't think anyone posting on this part of the forums could make that comment seriously!

Yeah, looking to recreate the Jap Arcade feel in a room...

Just going to need to buy more Jap stools because one isn't going to be enough!

For a nice CRT you should just check out some local Jumble Sales. I went to sale not long ago and I could a huge CRT for pretty much nothing. Absolutely no-one showed any interest in as everyone thinks there now obsolete! Had to leave it in the end due to lack of space!

Agreed! Mario games are the best!

Great pictures mate.

Beautiful seeing them all lined up like that.

Good idea about the jumble sales!! Never actually thought about checking them out.

So... How many of these bad boys are you going to be lining up in your room? haha

Mmm, it's either going to be 3 or 4 I think! I'm going to have one hell of an electricity bill each month!

You'd be surprised at what gems you can pick up at sales!

Egret 2 now up and running! Taito PSU replacement came today and did the trick! Now I just need to get the marquee lit up and it's perfect!

I'll post some pics of it up and running in due course!

Re: A couple of my Candy Cabs - a work in progress

It's great to see an arcade thread with the up to date candy cabs. (never was a fan of the rotten wooden ones)

I've had a candy cab for about 4 years now. It's running MAME and I really like it when I get time to play it.

I was thinking about selling it actually, but I don't know whether there's much interest in these now days? I used to go on the killer cabs forum, but I think it's been down for a while now!

I'll post some picks if there's any interest?

Re: A couple of my Candy Cabs - a work in progress

Hi Dazzler... I'd definitely be interested in seeing some pics!

Like most things, they are popular with certain people! I'm sure you'd get a fair amount of money for it (obviously depending on what it's like!) I like the old woody cabs in a way, but candies look a lot more contemporary and take up less space and look better grouped together than woodies do!

Hello Slapaham,

No probs, I'll take some and post them when I get 5.

How many cabs do you need then

Re: A couple of my Candy Cabs - a work in progress

Well, I haven't decided yet!

I'm not even 100% sure where I'm getting a place yet as I'm in the process of sorting out my career so that might shape just how many I'm having! I think I might aim at a row of 4 sitdown cabs and unfortunately cull the Nintendo Playchoice-10 woody and the stand-up Sega Naomi cabs from the collection!

Hopefully things will become clearer in the next few weeks.

Re: A couple of my Candy Cabs - a work in progress

Four sit downs, very nice!!! I've quite often thought about rotating the screen on mine, so vertical shooters look and play how they’re meant to. I couldn't be bothered at the time as I was into SF vs. xmen.

Good luck with the career choices.

Cheers mate. Looks like I'm going to have to aim high to get a house big enough!

Yeah, I keep meaning to sort one out with vertical orientation as that's the only way to play your shooters!

So what cab is it that you've got?

Re: A couple of my Candy Cabs - a work in progress

Hello mate,

It's an LS sound. It has a 29" monitor and it's running MAME with Maximus arcade front end.

What do you think? To be honest I don't really have much time to play it anymore, but it is brilliant fun.

Re: A couple of my Candy Cabs - a work in progress

I like the LS Sounds... I think they are clones of the Neo Geo candy cabs aren't they? Looks like a nice set-up!

Is it jamma wired as well? MAME is great but I always feel overwhelmed with the choice!

Anyway, nice looking cab - looks pretty darn minty too!

Re: A couple of my Candy Cabs - a work in progress

Thanks mate.

I don't think it is to be honest...... it's been so long since I've looked inside, but I can’t ever remember seeing one.

MAME suits me fine though really, but I know what you mean about here being too much choice. You can find a game that you like one day and never find it again if you don't take note of the name...

One thing I find with owning your own arcade machine is that, you don't try as hard as you would if you were in the arcade, as you know that you only have to click the credit button to have another go. I know it sounds strange but I think this kind of ruins the enjoyment I think.

Still great fun though!

What you playing at the moment?

Re: A couple of my Candy Cabs - a work in progress

No, you're spot on! I feel exactly the same... where as before you'd put 50p in and try and get your money's worth, there isn't the same motivation when you either have access to the service button or have a credit button... I suffer the exact same problem myself!

I'd like to get around to getting MAME up and running again on one of my cabs but I'd never have the time to utilise it anyway!

Well... completed Tecmo World Soccer 96 on Neo Geo MVS this evening - probably added 6 credits mind you! Pitfighter PCB arrived through the post today as well - that game sucks from memory but it was a cheapy one so couldn't resist - I guess I'll probably give it a whirl tomorrow - hopefully better than I remember! Hopefully sorting out getting Uo Poko soon as well too!

How about you? Any game recommendations?

Re: A couple of my Candy Cabs - a work in progress

The cabs are looking Jon

Thought I'd get involved on here rather then keep bothering the poor guys thread in Gaming classifieds lol

I'm starting the long arduous process of saving for my cab

Decided £50-£70 a month (about what I waste on crap at the moment) should see me with a nice down payment ready for the next cab order I hope

Got any new games on the horizon for yours??

I'm going to have to be VERY selective with my purchases when I get it...CAVE boards arent cheap lol
Although I will be investing in some J-Pacs so I can use my 360, PS2 & maybe Saturn (If they do one) in it.

Anyway they look awesome & I'm very jealous

Neil

Re: A couple of my Candy Cabs - a work in progress

Cheers Neil! You have PM by the way!

I'm not soooooo selective about which PCBs I pick up. I actually seem to generally like the cheap and cheerful ones - although, having said that, Uo Poko is on the way (as previously mentioned!) - not your typical Cave game but I absolutely love it! Not too bad for £50 which is the upper end of what I tend to pay for my games! Also, Columns arrived today - while it's not different to the Mega Drive version really it's still one of the games I could happily sit and play for a good hour. I do like my puzzlers, shooters and sports games!

Also a bit Neo fan - Puzzle Bobble should hopefully arrive soon.

Have some bad news - there is no J-Pac for the Saturn as far as I'm aware - if you're in need of console adaptors for J-Pac I may be selling mine some time soon - I don't really use them - let me know if and when you want them!

Been working on my cabs today - couple of kids got rather excited when walking past our house and had to give them a guided tour - bit embarrassing but nice to see they appreciated them - I'm pretty sure one of the lads will be bugging his parents for one now! I will give my photos a massive update in the next few weeks - the collection is somewhat growing!

Good on you saving up for a cab - for IC09 I had the exact same plan but only really managed to save half of it - the other half I used some of the student overdraft for!

Have you picked up any games recently? How'd the stick mods go you were talking about a month or so back? Keep meaning to invest in some myself as my consoles suffer at the hands of my cabs!

Hey Jon,

Thanky for the PM...shall be replying imminintley

The missus is a massivs Puzzler fan & I'm under strict instructions that once I get a cab that I will be buying Mushihime-tama which we both played at IC'09 & It's great
Also I have to get Puzzle Fighter & a version of puzzle bobble too
I know I'll deffinitley be picking up a few CPS classics when I do get in on the scene...I need some AvP, Caddilacs & Dinosaurs & Area 88 in my life

I actually expected that about the J-Pacs for the Saturn
Looks like I'll be needing PCB's for Battle Garegga & Batsugun then

Ooh could be interested in the J-Pacs if you do sell...need a cheaper way to play Espgaluda & Dodonpachi DOJ if I can

LOL they sound like the kids round my way when I'm out cleaning the car or fiddling with the Sound System
It's always a good feeling when other people take an interest in your work
Look forward to the updated pics then.

LMAO I can say I'll start saving but wether it happens or not is a different matter...I'm supposed to be getting married next April & I'm sure the little lady thinks that HUGE expense takes precident over a new Cab, little does she know

Game wise recently I've been building up a PS3 collection, my 360 died recently so trying to source a new Japan unit as well which is proving more difficult & expensive than anticipated
Got my orders in ready for the 360 releases of Mushi Futari, Espagulda 2 & Ketsui though so will be well sorted when they arrive

Stick mod went well with the Sanwa parts, havent had much time to use it though since the 360 died about a week after getting it back
Still sorting the Seimitsu parts for the other stick though, no rush though until the 360 is fixed or I get a new one.

To be honest I think your doing the best thing with buying games on the cabs...precious little on the consoles at the moment IMO

Howdy Biscuitboy & welcome along,

You really need to get yourself signed up here...

Arcade Otaku • Index page

It's a dedicated forum for arcade gaming & they will be able to help you out no end with supplier info.
There is also a for sale section wth some awesome cabs up for sale at the moment including 2 Naomi Windy's @ £600 each & an incredibly sexy Astomiswave for similair money all of which will be way cheaper then sourcing yourself.

Unfortunatley they arent small, all are 29" monitors & the Windy's are particular pains as they dont come apart like Egret's do & makes moving them a total pain in the backside from what I've heard.

Anyway hope that helps

As Neil/Soundwave suggested Otaku is a good place for candy cabs... a lot of them are around 25-29" screens though - there are some with smaller ones - such as the Capcom Cute but expect to pay mega bucks for one of those - they are a bit of rarity and highly sought after!

Really, it's just luck as to what you can find - it's a good idea to join as many arcade forums/communities as possible such as Arcade Otaku, Jamma+, Shmups, NeoGeo.com, etc... they all have trading sections...

Might be a good idea to look into IC10 when it starts getting planned probably later this year as it's very likely to happen according to Grant and Alan over at Otaku - they said there will be another cab order with some very, very nice cabs rumoured!

Neil... Mushihime-tama was definitely my highlight of IC09 - awesome game - expect to pay quite a lot for it mind you! Hence why I went for Uo Poko until I can get/afford it! Lots of people seem to prefer Uo Poko and while I love it nearly as much, it doesn't quite pip it for me! Loving the cat character and the beyond cheesy music mind you!

Yeah, puzzlers are great for the girlfriends... keeps them happy! Puzzle Bobble on MVS is good and cheap so you'll have no problems there - mine arrived today, in fact! £15 delivered - not bad for a top game!

Embarrassingly, I still haven't ventured into the world of CPS2 - the games you've mentioned I enjoy but I can never bring myself to pay the kind of prices they go for, simply because shmups, puzzlers and sports games are where my interests are...

I'll keep you posted on the J-Pacs - keep meaning to, at least, give Ikaruga a whirl using the Wii one...!

No, it was nice spreading the word of cabs to a new generation - feel sorry for the parents though who'll get it in the ear when it comes to birthdays and christmas! Take it you're a bit of car person then? I never used to be, but since I got my new one I'm increasingly becoming more interested!

Ah, well congrats on the Wedding plans - I remember you mentioning them before! It amuses me reading on some arcade forums that some of the members have avoided marriage simply because they know they'd not get away with cab collecting once they were committed! Quite mean but totally hilarious and probably quite true at the same time - hence, why I'm accumulating my collection as quickly as possible while I'm not tied down!

That's a bit crap about the Jap 360 dying - I never did get mine sorted/modded... other things took priority - it's still in a box somewhere in pieces waiting for me to give it another go - not sure whether to just sell it back on as spares and repairs instead!

In terms of the 'new' games I've picked up - I'd agree with you - they are all a bit ******! Embarrassingly, the games I've dipped my toes into recently (and when I mean dipped, I mean played for little over an hour each - I simply don't have the time or motivation to play most modern games!) are the truely horrendous 50 Cent game - so shallow it's comedic (I hate the pleb but it keeps me amused and it was dirt cheap!) and Bionic Commando (not bad so far!) - keep meaning to go back to Resi 5 and finish Wesker off but again, never quite find the time or effort to do it!

Unfortunately, playing my cabs isn't particularly easy at the moment as I need to find myself a new place - they are stuck in the garage where there is just enough space to store them and rarely play them for too long! MAME helps though on the old Xbox! It just seems easier until I've finished my restorations and moved out - cannot tell you how much I'm looking forward to having them set up and laid out!

Re: A couple of my Candy Cabs - a work in progress

I love Minicutes but after trying to play one at IC09 I decided better of it...look awesome but woefully impractical I feel.
Could consider the Neo19's as well...similair size IIRC but obviously geared for Neo Geo & MVS so probably not what your looking for.

I've heard of good things coming in the IC10 order as well when it's ready to go so could be worth a wait

I'd never even heard of Uo Poko until you mentioned (shame on me) had a look & it looks great
Will deffinitley consider that when I get in on the scene

Tama is just so random, loved it
Highlight for me though was deffinitley Espgaluda 2 or finally getting a go on Ketsui (DS Death Label is great but it's only a boss run so you dont really get the true feel) it is every bit as good as I'd been led to believe

My missus loved the Puzzlers, she had her own little groupie in one guy wh constantly challenged her at Puzzle Fighter & Puzzle bobble only to lose each time lol
She's spent far too much time playing them on my Saturn lol

Thats a bloody awesome price for Puzzle Bobble...will deffinitley need to hook up an MVS setup at some point in the future, Garou: MOTW is worth the price of admission alone & then you have Magical Drop & Puzzle Bobble as well

CPS2 isnt as bad as it used to be now...AvP went on Shmups the other day for £80 which is hugely cheap for such an awesome classic IMO

Yeah been a bit of a cruiser ever since I passed my test.
Current steed is this bad boy...

That owes me a fair chunk of money as it's WAY past standard lol

Thanks for the good wishes, plans are coming along nicely & I've told her that for my wedding gift from her I want an Egret 2
Deffinitley get the collection in before you settle down & make sure there's a pre-nup for the cabs just in case

I knowI'm gutted totally bout the 360 hoping to get it up & running soon...Mushi Futari is dated for 26th November now so need it before then lol

I've been plodding through Infamous & Uncharted recently on the PS3 & tbh they are actually pretty good & worth the price of the PS3 alone.
Blazblue has ben keeping me occupied to but without an arcade stick it's almost unplayable on the PS3 pad
So a Hori RAP 3 or Madcatz SFIV TE is next on the cards for my PS3

You've reminded me actually I do need to sort MAME out on my Crystal X-box at some point...it does need a HDD mod though as I'm still running the original 8GB drive

I bet you cant wait, I'd be exactly the same as you if they were mine.

Re: A couple of my Candy Cabs - a work in progress

After IC09 - I really want a Neo-19 - lovely little cabs - not too keen on the styling of the Capcom Cute if I'm honest... looks a bit... well... deformed to me! Hopefully have the opportunity of getting a Neo in the IC10 order - heard there is a good chance of Neo cabs!

I would highly recommend Uo Poko - Cave puzzler - it's technically the prequel to Mushihime-tama but obviously the later game includes the characters and themes from Mushihime-tama (think it's a TV series or something in Japan) while Uo Poko doesn't. They are very similar games. If I had my way, I'd have both! (but I'm not that rich!) Looks like you're going to have a big shopping list on the PCB front when you do get that first cab...

I'll know not to challenge your missus then! My ex was stangely more into her shooters... like Resistance and Gears of War, though, in typical girl-y fashion, she was a Bejeweled and alike addict too! Having that on a touchscreen was like having an addict in the house!

You really can't go wrong with MVS - it really is cheap and as the games are carts they are less prone to breaking (I get bloody fed up with people selling me broken PCBs on ebay but not stating it - be VERY aware of this - if anything, pay more, and get them off the forums - it's a far safer bet!) - and as you know - Neo games are amongst the best out there!

Nice car mate! Liking that a lot! I've been told my car isn't very 'me'... my mates think because it looks a bit too respectable - charming! - it's this -

Škoda - Å*koda Octavia - Manufacturer of happy drivers

Haha, good luck on getting an Egret 2 for a wedding present! My biggest tip would be to find lots of pics/youtube vids showing it playing puzzlers! Well, I have a probable date later this week so I'll have to weigh her up! A bit too late anyway - cabs are part of the package!

If you need any help on the Xboxes let me know...

Re: A couple of my Candy Cabs - a work in progress

I like the Neo-19s too much better than a Minicute IMO.
They were awesome

Uo Poko is deffinitley on the list once I get a cab in
Looks great what I've seen of it.
LOL yeah my PCB list is verging on the side of obscene cost wise

Lol I've learnt not to challenge her too...far too many losses for my liking

Yeah I've been looking round at MVS today funnily enough & I could get more or less everything I like for almost peanuts...deffinitley think I'd be getting one of them in th future.

Thanks
That car stands me about £2k in mods so far...

Zimmerman Cross Drilled Discs
Mintex Extreme Pads (Front)
EBC Greenstuff Pads (Rear)

Phoenix Gold Ti Elite 6.5" Components running Active
Digital Designs 2512 12" Sub in Custom 2.5Cu/ft Slot Ported box tuned to 33Hz
Genesis Profile 4 Amp (Running front end actvely @ 50Wrms per speaker)
Genesis Profile 1 Sub Amp (Running 2ohm @ 600Wrms)
Soundeanded all round with Damplifier Pro

It's a lovely motor though & I'm still really pleased with it

Lol thats nice isnt it??
Nothing wrong with an Octavia...I like them alot & the VRS is awesome too.

LOL Well I'm goign to try as hard as I can...I'm sure if I keep going on I'll wear her down eventually

Good luck with the date...just make sure she know's your a job lot with the cabs
My missus soon got used to my Toy Collecting & she's stuck around so there is hope for some women out there

May hit you up for some help on the Xboxes...no idea how to do a HDD mod on a softmodded machine

Re: A couple of my Candy Cabs - a work in progress

I went through a massive Xbox modding phase - it's incredible what a last gen console can do! If you need any help just shout!

That motor is very nice! It's a thing of passion... when you're really into something you don't mind pumping the cash in - it seems worth it when you stand back and feel proud of it! Yeah, I'm very pleased with the Octavia.

Haha, no worries, I don't think it takes people long to realise I'm a bit of a collector... you know you've got a keeper when they don't moan about it too much!

Talking of which - some updated pics - this is the total cab collection - still lots to do on them all but gives you an idea!

The candies...

From left to right... 2x New Astro City, Astro City, Egret 2

The big'uns...

L-R - Sega Naomi, Nintendo Playchoice-10

Thinking about converting the Naomi into a Net City sit down at some point - but one thing at a time!

Seriously, MVS is so cheap it's criminal! If you're into your Cave, I suppose at least you can buy one Cave game, once in a while and buy plenty of MVS carts to keep you busy while you're in between saving for the next Cave PCB!

I'm excited to see what they're bringing in for IC10 - if they have Neo candies I'm not sure I'll be able to resist!

Re: A couple of my Candy Cabs - a work in progress

Jebus Jon

Thats some serious collection there now.

Those New Astro's look sexay & that Egret is to die for...your a lucky man

Still working on the parents about Garage space lol
Not getting very far though

Lol yeah my missus has given up moaning & now actually participates by getting me bits for Chrimbo & Birthday's

Yeah I expect I'll have a fair chunk of MVS titles to keep me busy when I finally get on the Cab ladder, so much classic goodness for almost the same as an Xbox 360 game, cant be bad in my book

I'm looking forward to the potential orders for IC10.
Shame they are potentially moving it to Coventry as I dont think I'll be able to make it if they do that this time round
Still if there is a cheap cab involced I'll at least be in on the order...I hope

Neil
