Re: Energy saving Light Bulbs

OK, fair enough, but these are completely different types of light. Luxeons are LED based and not fluorescent based.

I've also not heard of anyone else having such problems (not that I am saying there are none)...Do you know if you are particularly sensitive to any forms of strobing?

Re: Energy saving Light Bulbs

Right, well i've now refitted my entire upstairs (bar 1 room) with energy saving light bulbs and i'm mighty impressed.

The light starts off about 20% dimmer a conventional bulb, but within a minute it's actually brighter than a normal bulb i'd say by about 10%. The light emitted from the upstairs bulbs is very similar to normal bulbs and exactly what you would expect.

All in all i'm really pleased.

I'm looking for a dimmable energy saving light bulb now but cannot find one sub £8 which I think will negate any cost saving for me, so i'm not changing this one for the time being. If anyone can find one cheaper please let me know, i'm looking for an 11W Bayonet Cap Energy Saver.

Now for downstairs, i'm not quite as happy here...

As we have an open plan living/dining area it made sense to get some energy saving bulbs as we're in here here the most. As we use "candle" lights I opted for "ENERGY SAVING CANDLE 7w LIGHT BULB" from eBay.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...m=360087238984

Unfortunately the light produced is "Bright White" and a bit too glarey, it also doesn't suit the room that well (but that's not the candle's fault), also I was slightly disappointed with the size, i'm sure for some people it would be fine and the light may even be to their liking (almost xenon).

If anyone can find me some energy saving equivalent size of conventional candle bulb lights then please post a link, i'm looking for 40w equivalents that are screw in's and produce a normal warm light and not xenon/stadium light white.

Chris.

Re: Energy saving Light Bulbs

UPDATE

Bought 3 Lamp Bulbs from Sainsbury's on my way home the other night, the light is much warmer than the previous set, cost was about £2.50 per bulb but they are much smaller. Not sure i'll ever see the cost saving benefit as in total i've spent about £15 getting the right lights now but kay sara.

Still looking for a cheap dimmable energy saver then that's every light I use on a daily basis in my home done bar the kitchen.

Re: Energy saving Light Bulbs

I think you'll find you get your money back very quickly, especially with the cost of electricity at around £0.19 / kWhr. Depending on usage and the difference between the old and new bulb's power requirements, it could be just a few months to break even.

Re: Energy saving Light Bulbs

Needed one no bigger than a conventional bulb for inside a restricted glass shade. Found in Tesco, GE 12W exactly the right size for £2.38.
In Asda since, same bulb at £4.99

I am concerned that proper lightbulbs are becoming harder to find, and I am also worried that some silly law might come out to take them all off the shelf. Therefore, I managed to source 200 60W proper lamps for just 14p each, bargain

...not such a bargain when you consider the cost of the energy they use!

Re: Energy saving Light Bulbs

Being completely honest here I was a sceptic of energy saving bulbs and I didn't believe the hype. I thought they weren't going to be as bright/wrong colour and may take ages to warm up.

All I can say is how wrong I was.

Literally they are the same size as normal bulbs, they cost 50p these days, they use 10% of the power and the light that they emit is actually more after about 1 minute of use and about 80% of a conventional bulb during the 1st minute (no biggy, you can't even really notice it much, in fact it's easier on the eyes).

So for any none believers out there, go and spend 50p of your hard earned on one and be amazed, I guarentee the newest ones are extremely good.

They do have the '2-pin twist fit' too, picked up a few the other day and they are pretty good (for 10p each!)

Sounds good to me. It is annoying me that we are being told what to buy and what not to buy. I got a load of normal bulbs which should last for a few years. I got loads of 60 watts, but they are mainly for the downstairs loo and the stairs. I also got a load of 100watt bulbs, for other rooms.

I have to get some more just to make sure I have enough so when this dictator government decide they know what is best for us decide to ban them from sale.

At the moment there will only be a recommendation not to sell normal bulbs, but how long wil it be before we will not be able to get any?
thank goodness for Pound stretchers.

Been there, done that, still find they are no good. I don't know where you found these bulbs for %0p, but around here, they are 99p or more.

Maybe one day when LEd bulbs get beter and they have better light I will change my mind, but I am staying with my normal bulbs,

Obviously not shopping at Morrisons then.
Morrisons sell energy saving bulbs for 39p each and have done so for some time, they still do, but are also currently running a promotion and are now selling them five for 50p.

Why should we be forced anyway, what the hell have it got to do with our government or any one else for that matter what bulb we use?

Maybe they should ban those 500watt outside halogen bulbs first.

I don't shop a Morrisons that often and if I do I normally go in, get what I want and get out, but then I do that with all supermarkets when I am shopping and I work for one.

I came home this evening and saw a leaflet in our local free paper about them. Philips, with enforced by e-on stuck on them.

Still not buying any,

The point I was trying to make is that the Laws of Physics rather than some "silly" law of the land are driving this, whether people who do not understand like it or not.

What it has got to do with our Govt is that they are elected to look after us and we will all suffer a lot economically if something is not done about the selfish few.

supermarkets and DIYs will stop selling normal bulbs, but you will always have places like Pound strecher that will continue doing so unless it does become illegal.

Selfish few? Tell me how much equipment in audio, video and computers have you got? think about how much power that lot uses.

I have a 42 inch Plasma that take over 300watts of power when on, a DVD recorder, a TUTV box, a Wii, a PS3, a 5.1 surround amp ( cheap tacky thing, but it will do for a while). then there is my hi-fi. All of these are on standby 24 hours a day. then my computer upstairs is on more than it is off. My laptop is never off. then you got the small things like chargers for dect phones, I got 4 of them and then the router.

That is only in my house and yes I do have more electronics than some people.

My neighbour have three Sky boxes, no doubt three T.vs in standby, and a few DVd players, plus a LCd T.V which takes a fair bit of power when it is on.

I bet I could go down the road and ask every single person if they leave their gadgets on in standby and I bet 99% of the people do and there are a lot of people on my side of the road that have Sky, and no doubt on the other side, but their dish would be around the back of the house.

so I don't think that me or a few other people not using low energy bulbs is going to make a lot of difference.

Still got nothing to do with the government and they are hypocrites when they waste more energy than I do.

I use normal bulbs, because I don't like Low energy ones, I am not being forced into using low energy, and I don't care what this government or some greenies that want us to live in caves say.

It would be nice if these low energy lights worked, the spots I have in the bathroom take minutes to get to their full brightness.

It's not the government or "greenies". It's scientists. If you think you know better, that's up to you.

I turn all my stuff off when I'm not using it - I have better things to do than go to work just so I can pay energy bills I don't need to.

so the scientists know better than me about my dislike of low energey bulbs? I don't think so. As for scientists being right, they have been wrong about many things before. Even evolution is still only a theory

I turn all my stuff off when I'm not using it - I have better things to do than go to work just so I can pay energy bills I don't need to.
The upstairs comp is normally in use, even if I am not by it, the laptop is just useful to be left on and to be honest take very little power. The other stuff left on standby is because it is easier and less hassle.

Still, if you do end up with a warm rosy glow, you'll be able to turn the heating down
Fantastic, it shows that nothing is known about these bulbs at all. Fuirst the mercury and now a UV light fear. Why are these things not checked out first , before they try and force them on us?
