The "Greenest" Desktop Computers of 2008

An interesting article on green electronics/computing (which of course, would be an integral part of “reducing your carbon footprint”)...

How do you judge the greenness of a computer? The two most important factors are power consumption, and the elimination of hazardous components inside the machine. Other factors such as the efficiency of the power supply, packaging and the manufacturer’s support for recycling programs are also important. Overall, there are a huge number of factors to assess, but thankfully there are now some eco-certifications that make it easier. The most important certifications are EPEAT (Electronic Products Environmental Assessment Tool), RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) and Energy Star 4.0. All three of these certifications are standardized, so they are more specific in their assessments than the marketing claims or green initiatives of the past.

Another useful guide is Greenpeace’s Guide To Greener Electronics which was recently updated in June. The companies that scored the highest ratings from Greenpeace were Sony Ericsson, Sony, Nokia and Dell.

Re: The "Greenest" Desktop Computers of 2008

I only have a Laptop so it spends 1 1/2 hours to fully charge and then I get 2 1/2 hours usage out of it on a mix of power saving and performance or nearly 4 if it's on a power saver setting. So in effect it's not using any household power for up to 4 hours yet I can continue using it as if it were a Desktop PC drawing power all the time

Sadly when it's plugged I must confess to disabling the majority of power saving features to increase performance (disabled PowerMizer for example)....

But as I don't do this often I would generally say my Laptop is pretty efficient given it's high spec.

So called green computers are fine if all you want to do is browse the net and send emails. To be greener they have to have a low sped CPU, which slows them down.

My desktop uses a 300Watt power supply and that is about the lowest it can use. A work mate have a 500Watt power supply in his machine and the new machine I am building for hill will have 1000Watt one, now that is some power. It needs it for the video cards that is going to be put into it.

I got a laptop which I use for the net, the desktop is used for video editing.

That's why i've switched to using my laptop for most of the day, my main PC has a 700 watt power supply plus the monitor, plus the sound system. It seemed such a waste of money using that when my laptop was on streaming music at the same time.
