I wonder how much energy the system itself uses.

Pretty sure it's just the old X10 system, repackaged to sell to greens.

Re: Bye Bye Standby Review

nothing wrong with learning to conserve limited resources.

Limited resources has nothing to do with GW

the cutting of the extra emissions is just a bonus since it is pollution and is harmful to the environment.

Example mercury, radiation, nitrous oxide, etc. All these things are bad for us. I know mercury is not a green house gas but it causes severe illness. Once it is in the body there is no getting it out....

The real question becomes does it take more resources and energy to produce those switches than the energy saved by preventing standby...

This is where you take in the "Total Cost" every thing involved along the whole process and its entire life use.

example where the "total cost" exceeds the benefit is if the unit had a very short life, breaks down every few months and needs to be thrown away and is unrecyclable the resources consumed to use the switch would exceed the energy saved that standby uses. Thus it would be more wasteful.

I would be curious as to know how much resources and energy that went into making them and the actual life of the units. Vs the energy from standby that a particular item uses. Do a comparison.

If it was made in china I am pretty sure it has an ultra short life-cycle. almost everything electronic or motorized from there has broke for me within 6 months or less.

Give you an Idea I spent about 500$ for 50$ or less on electronic or motorized items made in china all but 2 have broke and were not recyclable as a result I am extra careful to look at the label where it was made. All of the resources that went into making those items were wasted, Extremely unsustainable.

I hope for the best with this particular item , that it is worthwhile

A lot of stuff is made in China now, including high priced products, take a look at some of the games consoles. I have products that are made in China and they seem ok, I would like more p[products to be made in the U.K, instead of some sweatshop in China mind you.

I agree with the rest of what you say

My point is that these are just X10 marketed towards a single topic of standby saving, while I have been using X10 for about 10 years to do just that plus a load of other automation tasks.

In other words you could have bought this any time in the last 10 years, nothing new.

Re: Bye Bye Standby Review

Rather than buy something for this type of job, I simply put a large switch (often used for fan isolators) half way along the lead to an extension block into which all my hi-fi/cinema components are then connected. The switch is on the floor and can be turned on and off by foot. Simple, easy, no electronics.

The reason for doing this was that switches for the hi-fi stuff were very hard to get to and my damned tuner takes 7 Watts on standby/off and 7.5 to 8W when running. All the parts were sitting around at home so nothing new needed to be bought.

Just an idea.

Re: Bye Bye Standby Review

I use a power surge strip in the exact same manor in that its a hardline kill switch for 2-5 plugs.
