Have been looking to replace the 240V 50W GU10 spots in my kitchen with LEDs for some time.

Last time I looked even the zenigata lamp light output was falling quite a bit short of the 50W GU10s so I didn't follow it up.

Lighting is quite poor in my kitchen so I'm concerned about making it worse.

Looking recently, I see there is a new boy on the market, a Toshiba 9W whose light output is quite close 390 lux versus 440 lux.

They are quite expensive - would be about £300 to do my kitchen but I don't mind that if they are up to the job.

Wondering if anyone here has tried these and have any comments.

Toshiba Dimmable 8.5w GU10

I bought one to try out - very impressed with it. Much better than the GU10 11w CFL energy saving ones I had already - brighter,instant start up and even lower wattage. I also like the warm white which produces a more "traditional" light.

It's so good that I will eventually replace all my GU10's with them, BUT not so quick though as at almost £30 a bulb, that's crazy money and will wait till they come down in price a bit. Plus I want to run this one for a while to see what the longevity is like.

Overall, seems like LED have come on leaps and bounds - well at least this Toshiba one anyway.

Would you agree it is comparable with a 240V 50W halogen.

I've read the specs and marketing blurb that it is, but would appreciate a real world opinion.

Yes they are expensive - about £300+ to do my kitchen. I'm happy to do that if they are as good as the claims though.

I've put the 50w halogen, 11w cfl and the 8.5w LED in a rack of three. I would say the LED is slightly less bright than the halogen. The 11w cfl is the least bright. I also prefer the colour of the LED as I'm now finding the Halogen rather yellow.

I've only done a simple test and don't own a light meter or such like, but I would say the LED is probably closer to 40w-45w than 50w. However, for me, I would be more than happy to install them in my kitchen (which isn't extremely tall) when they come down in price a bit.

The other thing I forgot to mention is the LED is quite bulky, you may want to check their compatibility beforehand.
