In a desperate bid to regain Denmark's flagging environmental reputation (ahead of the upcoming Copenhagen Climate Conference) the right-of-centre government has promised to make the nation's existing cycle lane network fully navigable again by 2050.

Not true, unfortunately, despite the cycle lanes and cycle paths becoming ever more dangerous. With cracking, huge potholes, leaves and fallen branches, litter and stones commonplace. This government inherited an almost perfectly surfaced and maintained rural road system and cycle lane network. Now road repairs are reduced to a shovel full of tarmac tamped down with the back of the same shovel. The daily, rural road sweeping vehicles are no more on economic grounds. This despite a constantly expanding national economy and oil wealth. Moraines of stones and gravel now remain untouched on many rural junctions.

Anything which affects the safety and enjoyment of the large Danish cycling population is very bad for the environment. Politicians at climate conferences should be judged by their actions. Not by their empty promises.

If we can't judge politicians by their empty promises, what else do we have?
