Consumer electronics that reduce my carbon footprint

Everybody is getting aware of the impact we have on the environment. This discussion is although not the subject of matter in this post.

I would find it more interesting if you could inform me about current or new consumer electronics, which help me reduce my carbon footprint! What are the most efficient, cheap or innovative ones?

Which consumer electronics could we see in three years that help/support me in saving the environment?

Re: Consumer electronics that reduce my carbon footprint

As a rule, modern equipment is usually more energy efficient than earlier generations (but there are some notable exceptions). Noticeably, the new Samsung LED TV's are claimed to be about 40% more energy efficient than an equivalent LCD TV. These TV's even have a real-time gauge that will show you how much more efficiently it is running (although this is something of a gimmick). Plus they have a great picture and the slimmest designs on the market.

Thanks for the reply!

In general one could say that LEDs are going to have a major positive impact! Both in lighting and other applications were light is needed. I even read that the luminous efficacy will lead to sharper pictures/higher contrast when used in LCD TV's.....

Well, bits of kit that are built to last would, probably, be the best place to start your search. i only throw this in as an example because I bought a Philips box for digital terrestrial tv and was a little concerned when it finally died after 15 months. The cause of the problem was the capacitors in the PSU, which are possibly amongst the cheapest components in the box, and they failed. So I replaced them rather than replace the box and it has been fine ever since.

I guess I was supposed to throw it away and upgrade, but nuts to that. So, when looking to reduce your carbon footprint vis a vis consumer electronics, place durability or fixability up there near the top of your list.
