Proper Solution to replacing the PS3 remote NOW AVAILABLE

A guy in the States has just launched (today) a device that converts ir - bluetooth.
A little black box (about the size of a packet of fags) receives the ir commands from a universal / learning remote, then converts it to bluetooth to be sent wirelessly to your PS3.
The guy (Bruce Mitchell) has been working on this for months trying to get everything 'just right'. He's even managed to get it to power on/off and get the PS button working.
I've been following the progress of this since it started and have just placed my order.
Webshop
irbt forum
First 200 sold out in 12 hours on 28/03
Another 300 available from 5pm Sun 06/04

I already posted this in the PS3 section, but it's good that it's here too.
The order form is: http://www.ir2bt.com/cart

Re: Proper Solution to replacing the PS3 remote NOW AVAILABLE
I've been following it for a while as well, and got the "we're taking orders" note this morning. I was order number 89, when I placed mine about an hour ago. So he's almost sold half his initial stock.

I was initially looking at the IR4PS3 (reviewed here http://www.remotecentral.com/article..._ir_remote.htm) which is more of a mod of the current PS3 BR remote to accept IR input, until I found the ir2bt device - I just think it's the neatest and better solution right now. No doubt even better ones will appear in time, but for me this is the best thing out there at the moment

They've sold out already
Glad I got my order in when I did. I was order no 4
They should be more stock in one week's time. This product is most certainly the best of the solutions available. All of the original bluetooth commands have even been included on the Harmony database already.

Re: Proper Solution to replacing the PS3 remote NOW AVAILABLE
Damn, wish id seen this a few days back.
So how much is this all in shipped to the uk?
I take it you just pop this unit anywhere with a line of site to your remote and it does what it says on the tin. Its a shame it cant go on top of the PS3 really.
Im going to site the site as my homepage and see if I can nab one of the next batch.
Also I take it this device needs to be powered somehow, is it a multivoltage device etc? And does it come with the power cord or not? What do we need to do in the UK to power this?
If anyone wants to sell theres, lmk.

Re: Proper Solution to replacing the PS3 remote NOW AVAILABLE
Cost to the UK is $55 + $20 shipping.
It's an IR receiver so has to be in line of sight with your universal remote though I suspect that most of us will be using an IR extender so placement won't be a problem. Personally I'd have thought that having on top of the PS3 would be the worst place to have it: mine will be tucked away out of sight.
It is powered by two AA batteries or via a USB cable i.e. 5v. It's fairly easy and cheap to pick up a mains adaptor to turn a cable into a power supply.
All I have to do now is wait until order 103 is sent out and crosses the pond.

Cheers, though I think your in the minority in using an IR extender to be honest. Would be nice to have it all out of sight but Im sure I'll find somehwere.
And if it were possible to have it on top of the PS3 why would you consider it to be the worst place possible? I cant think why it would be any worse than anywhere else to be fair.

Re: Proper Solution to replacing the PS3 remote NOW AVAILABLE
I'd not put it on top of the PS3 because:
It would look unsightly
The top of the PS3 is rounded and gets hot (OK slightly dodgy)
The beauty of BT in this instance is that it doesn't have to be in the same room
All aesthetic reasons not technical I'm afraid.
I'd also have to have to say that anyone paying £40 for a IR solution for the PS3 over the £10 Logic3 or Nyko solutions is way too obsessive not to have an IR extender
John

Surely an extender is just as messy and unsightly as this solution anyway if you cannot shut away your equipment. I don't have the option of putting stuff in a cupboard or closed unit. But I do want to use my harmony like a normal remote, i.e to be able to turn the damn thing on.
And the only real reason why on top if the PS3 is worse than anywhere else given no rf extender is that it may get hot. The others aren't really reasons now are they.

Re: Proper Solution to replacing the PS3 remote NOW AVAILABLE
Well personally When I order mine for use with my pronto I'll be experiemnting with trying to hide it where it still gets IR. As an example my Apollo ambient lights have an IR receiver which is stuck facing downwarcds on the back of my screen completely out of sight bugt still gets a signal. I'm hoping to do something similar and hide the IR2BT so it will still get an IR signal but be invisible.
P.S. has anyone who ordered got theirs yet? were there any customs or import charges to pay?

My order was shipped out of Miami at 05:13, 31/03. My order was Bruce's first international order. I'm expecting delivery in 6/7 days.
I'll be sure to report back, once received.
