Which Remote

Hi People

Looking for some advice on Remote controls. I have a very old Marantz RC5000 remote which is based on the Philips Pronto remote. Its seen better days so its time to replace it.

The one thing I loved about the remote was the ability to put comands where you wanted them and customise your own screens and make macros. I know its time consuming but once done the macros and screens were exactly how I wanted them.

Most remotes these days seem to be ‘Activity’ based remotes and sound to me like they are restrictive in what they can and can’t do as the remote decides what to do for you.

I want the flexibility of my old Pronto. Can anyone recommend a replacement. I have been looking at the Harmony 1000 but just read bad things in the discussion thread.

And read enough about the new Prontos from Philips TSU9400 & TSU9600

Thanks in advance.

Re: Which Remote

Given the things you liked about your existing remote, I'm not sure you have many options other than a pronto of some description.

Is there a reason you're not considering the 9400 / 9600? I've had RU940 / RU990 and liked them a lot. I now use the 940 in my bedroom but after a few weeks with the 9600 it's amazing how big and clunky the 940 seems - it's like it suddenly aged 10 years.

Re: Which Remote

I'd avoid the Logitech range then and just get another Pronto, if you want the flexibility. I have URC MX-700/850, as powerful as the pronto sw, but the LCD is text only (prefer it that way)

Re: Which Remote

Depending on budget I'd either recommend an NG Pronto or one of the new ones (9400/9600)

Colour is nice of course but I find my B&W RU950 still does a brilliant job and is light years ahead of a RU940 in use. I'd love a colour screen but can't justify the money.

The NG remotes are a lot better. You can use the whole screen in your designs rather than being restricted to the square at the bottom like with the 940 and the extra Hard buttons and menu pad are a real improvement.

Personally my money would go on a 2nd hand 980/990 or a new 9400 if I was particularly flush
