Remotes and their setup can be almost a hobby in itself.
For a quick easy to use solution you can't go wrong with Harmony.
I'm a Philips pronto fan myself for the ultimate in customisation. for B&W the RU950/960 can be picked up cheap on Ebay or for the pose go for a colour screen like the RU980/990. unfortunately neither units are current but you can still pick up new ones from some retailers. The prontos take a lot more setup and a certain amount of perseverance in learning the software but its worth it.
Whatever you go for (good reviews here:
www.remotecentral.com) the beauty of a good all in one is in the automation. i.e watch TV button switches on TV and changes input, switches on set top box and turns surround on and to the right input with one button
I speak from bitter experience that the Panasonic TV can be a swine to automate (specifically TH42PV500 but I imagine the menus are the same) the input menus can be tricky to setup in a macro and unfortunately there are no discreets available for this model (A lot of kit has extra IR codes not on the remote, i.e. seperate off and on or input select commands, very handy for your macros)
After that experience discreet remote codes are one of the criterias on my shopping list for my next TV
