About those cheap Touch-type remotes

Hi,
Just thought I'd post about this since it has frustrated me somewhat in the last few weeks. A number of people are selling these type of remotes and I thought why not, might be more comfortable and easier to use than rubber keys - https://www.hardware-winkel.com/i407...ch_screen.html
(well, mine was similar to that one anyway) I think I have seen them advertised in Maplins, who often sell some of this stuff.

I think they are selling under the Philex brand also and are similar to this one - philex slx 8 Way Universal Touch Screen Remote manual

I bought mine from Ebay for around £18 including delivery and it isn't even worth that. Once you have managed to get the code in and make the thing work for the device it is meant for it becomes a joke. Buttons are hard to press for a start and I think the design is flawed since some of them won't work unless you touch a certain area, which sometimes nearly overlaps with the next button. The pad is as cheap as I have seen even though it looks fair enough and lights up (if you position it the right way). Also, the rubber buttons at the bottom don't work or are mis-aligned ie. volume becomes channel change. Sometimes it stops responding altogether and I can only assume this is a product defect or another design issue.

OK I realise it is probably my fault for thinking anything like this would work well for the money but it doesn't even come close to being usable. I thought my Dad could use it and bought it partly for him but he just thinks it is like something Delboy would try to flog. Honestly, don't buy one, don't look at one at least unless until they can make them work as they should. This probably won't happen though so I'm sorry for pretending.

Regards,
Simon

Re: About those cheap Touch-type remotes

Hmm.. at that price.. well, I bought a new Kameleon 10 in one touch remote for about £30 off a seller on ebay (buy it now listing).
That works well, although it is a little on the large side..

Rather than being a normal touch screen, behind each "button" is a real button, so you have to push down on the button, rather than touch it, if that makes sense.

So for about £30, you can get a new Kameleon 10 in one, Charging dock/cradle, PSU, Remote extender unit for it (with psu and extra remote eyes on a long wire) and it comes with 2x rechargable AAs. Bargain IMO

They are still on there, and its a Kameleon URC 8210, and is £24.99 Buy it now, plus £4.99 postage, in case anyone wants to search for it

And thanks Simon for that warning, hopefully people will read it and avoid

Re: About those cheap Touch-type remotes

Thanks Penguin for that info, I think if I am looking at similar things in the future I will go for One4all or Philips or just any brand with a decent reputation. Doubt my father will want to try one though.

Really, this was a silly purchase but I didn't mean to slag off Philex products - I use a number of their cables and connectors and they are fine. Problem is you don't know what sort of quality you are getting sometimes.

Cheers,
Simon
