Asda ONN 160GB Tuner PVR - Advice Needed Please

Hi,

I have recently purchased an ONN 160GB PVR with twin tuner from Asda. I am unable to receive freeview where I live and have virgin media. Is it possible to record from my cable box to the pvr? And if so, how? Any information would be much appreciated.

Afraid not - PVRs only work from their internal tuners. If you want to record from an external source, such as your Virgin cable box, you need a DVD/HDD recorder. Perhaps, you can return/exchange it.

Can you not receive it because it is not available in the locality - or just because you do not have an aerial?

If it is the locality problem, the likelihood is that if you cannot receive Freeview now then you will be able to after the analogue switch off - That may affect your planning for the future.

Thanks for your replys. I am not sure if I have my terminology correct and meant hdd recorder instead of pvr, my actual model is an Onn LEDSTB0705 digital tv recorder. I can't get it to work anyway! As for the problem receiving freeview, it is down to location, it hasn't reached us here yet. I think my best option will be to go with a Virgin + box.

Cheers.

Yes you had the terminology correct.
We use that definition here to include platform specific hard disc recorders such as Virgin+ and sky+ and also open-platform devices such as Freeview hard disc recorders.

In the circumstances I agree.
Good luck.

Sorry, Gavtech, but now I'm confused. If this model is a DVD/HDD recorder (with or without a Freeview tuner) then surely it will be suitable for recording from a Virgin box, which was the query in edw4rd's OP.

The question, though, is whether the Onn LEDSTB0705 is a DVD/HDD recorder with a Freeview tuner, or a PVR. I've googled it but can't find a clear answer - sometimes it's described as the former, sometimes the latter; and I can't find a spec.

For once, the most helpful advice to edw4rd may be simply "Read the manual."

Hi Geofbob

Since the OP's first post mentioned the unit in question had twin tuners, I took that to mean most certainly it had to be a PVR - not a DVDR, since it would be pretty big news that we'd all know about if it were a SD DVDR with twin tuners.

But yes - You're right - Had it been a DVDR it would have been suitable... and Yes, maybe I have misinterpreted what edw4rd meant with his rejoinder.. but hopefully my post clarifies our terminology either way.

Many thanks for all your advice, I should have done a little bit of research before buying. Just to clarify, I have read the manual and it is of no help at all!

Just to clear up any doubt the LEDSTB0705 is a Vestel T816 Freeview PVR.
