Many thanks.

Not sure which equipment you have, however if the 3 RCA connectors are yellow red and white this only give you composite video which is the worst possible connection. The scart should offer you RGB video and provided you connect to a display with a RGB capable scart the picture quality will be much much better. There is a video only 3 rca connection known as component usually marked YUV or Y/Pb/Pr this will give you a connection equivalent to RGB but you will need 2 more rca cables for stereo audio.

Re: RCA or scart?

The 3 RCA will give the lowest possible picture quality known as composite.
A Scart connection will also give composite out UNLESS there is a setting in the source for RGB out. As you have not informed us of your source device (make/model) it would be also hard to advise.

It would depend where you are located and connecting what to what.

Scart offers 3 different possible modes of signal transfer : Composite [ Poor ] S-Video [ Better] RGB [Best] so it depends on the capability of the equipment connected and how they are configured.

3 RCA's - you could be meaning simply Video[ Composite] plus 2 audio... which is a poor form of connection... or you might be meaning Component form of connection which is video only and is an equivalent quality to RGB but often offers progressive delivery.

If you tell us what you are connecting to what it will be possible to be more definitive.

Re: RCA or scart?

Thanks guys. All very helpful and scart certainly wins that one!
Had the ariel guy in today and got the 4 LNB connected to the dish so can enjoy full pvr facilities. Only cost £100 all in so well pleased!
(My OP was with reference to DVD recorder which am about to buy. I wondered if I should connect 3 RCA leads to TV or connect by scart).

Re: RCA or scart?

If you mean the Red, Green and Blue phonos then yes as component video will be better, you will also need to connect the audio though as component only supports video.

Andy.

Re: RCA or scart?

Andy, the DVD recorder is the Toshiba RDXV48DTKTB and the TV is a Phillips Pixel Plus.
The RCA connectors are the Red, Yellow and white leads.

Re: RCA or scart?

Red, yellow and green? Are you sure?

Also, your Pixel Plus Philips is a CRT or an LCD? The model number will help if you are not in the UK.

In that case use Scart. The Red-Yellow-White on the TV indicates that it is a poor quality connection.

The Toshiba is defaulted to RGB out, so ensure you are connected to an RGB enabled scart on the TV... if you have a choice of more than one.

Re: RCA or scart?

Your TV instructions will notify you, but often it is embossed at the Scart socket on the TV. It is usually Scart socket 1, if your lucky you may even have two Scart sockets RGB enabled.

If it's a Philips set, they usually have blue SCART sockets for the RGB compatible ones, and Orange for Composite only.

Re: RCA or scart?

Philips PixelPlus CRTs may well have three SCARTs, two of which will take RGB and 1 S-Video (again better than composite). Also, check out the additional inlets (on the side?) for an S-Video connection.

The Philips consumer site has all the manuals for their TVs; all you need is the model number!
