Can I use a PVR with a tv with integrated freeview?

Hi, new here so I hope I'm not asking a question that's been asked many times before.

I have a much-loved Humax 9200T, connected to an ancient TV. It all works fine, but I'd like to add a DVD player to the mix. I know I can connect a standalone DVD player to the PVR in addition to the TV, but thought it might be a good opportunity to upgrade the TV, so I'm looking for a TV/DVD combi. Most of them seem to come with built-in freeview. I'm wondering what would happen if I connected a PVR with freeview to a TV/DVD with freeview. It sounds complicated to me, but if it worked it would give me back-up if the PVR ever failed.

Does anyone have any experience, or views on whether I should buy a combi with freeview or without?

Re: Can I use a PVR with a tv with integrated freeview?

It should make NO difference if the TV has built in freeview or not. But watch out a lot of TV's with combi drives (as are alot of small cheap TV's) are just PC monitors with a tuner and DVD drive.
TV's with resolutions of 1440x900, 1650x1050 are 16:10 PC monitors.
For the best picture from your Humax you want a TV with a RGB enabled scart socket and change the Humax to output 16:9 and RGB.

Re: Can I use a PVR with a tv with integrated freeview?

You can not connect a dvd player to a PVR.

PVR's are hard drive recorders which only record terrestial freeview direct from the aerial. Some are single tuner units which record just one programme whilst others like the Humax 9200T have twin tuners and can record two freeview channels simultaneously.

For connecting up a dvd player to the TV set together with other equipment see the Sony connection diagrams website. It's set up for Sony equipment but the basic principles apply to all AV equipment.

May be but it's a rubbish way of doing it.

The TV might output the DVD picture on one of it's scarts, if it does it will only be in poor composite quality.

Commercial DVDs sometimes have macrovision copy protection, in this case composite won't work properly.

We have a 9200tb connected to our old freeview/dvd combo lcd, It probably is a cheapy pc monitor with a freeview tuner and built in dvd player but the picture is still pretty good. We've found connection is no trouble at all simply by scart.
However you might like to test whether it will switch from dvd and back to your humax because ours can't. When we switch from dvd to freeview it goes to the tv freeview which of course doesn't have any signal because the aerial is connected to the pvr. We have to put the pvr into standby wait a few seconds and then power it on again, but of course the epg has to reload, but we can still select chanels via the remote.

Anyone else finding this with integrated dvd/tuners?

Surely the TV / DVD Combo has an input selection switch? ... which is what you should be using to select the scart input rather than switching to freeview ... which is only switching the TV to the internal tuner.

Which make/model is it?

It's a tevion 1910DT and it makes no difference when I select the scart input,
when togling between Humax and dvd it only goes back to the tv dvb.

Re: Can I use a PVR with a tv with integrated freeview?

The Humax is also fitted with an antennae loop socket. If you connect this to the TV aerial input you will be able to watch TV channels - selection by the TV remote control. The Humax must be in either On or standby mode for this to work (connection shown in handbook).
Other advantage of using this socket is that the Humax channel (tuner or playback) is also transmitted on CH36 (default channel) so if you wish to route this to another TV elsewhere in the house eg bedroom/kitchen, you could watch programme via the Humax whilst other family members are watching sport or DVD on main TV.
My own arrangement is: aerial fed to two way splitter feeding TV and Humax. Humax loop output to Virgin Vbox input. Virgin Vbox output fed to kitchen (soon to be back to whole house via 8 way distribution amplifier). This enable both the Humax and cable channel to be available to other TVs.
