My father in law has a problem...

He can delete recently recorded programs, however programs older than 2 months do not delete and the box just locks up when pressing delete option. On off solves the lockup but we still cannot delete the progs.. Any ideas most welcome

Try this:
Menu>Setup>Help>1397>Disable library video window, change it to YES.
Then go back and try deleting the problem recording.
It worked for me once, but the second time it didn't.
Either way, you've nothing to lose.

I'm not familiar with this PVR, but most PVRs have a facility for "locking" a recording, preventing it from being easily deleted. Possibly, this function was accidentally set up for the recordings you're trying to delete. Ideally, consult the instruction manual; but if it isn't to hand, have a look at the various recordings menus. On my PVR it appears on the "Edit" menu for each individual recording, where there's a toggle between deleting "Allowed" & "Disallowed".
