JVC HR-J696EK VCR tracking issues

I have just had my video repaired (diode in PSU replaced due to power cut)
Now when I play any tape it doesn't track, the picture remains stable for around 2 seconds then tries to auto track!!! I have tried several tapes and they all do it. I have lost the owners manual so im not sure how to adjust the tracking myself. Should I take it back to the shop?, it worked fine before the power cut.

The normal way to switch auto-tracking on is to press both tracking buttons at the same time.

I think you should return it... if you are quite sure It tracked OK before, but does not now.

If possible, take a known good self-recorded tape with the machine to demonstrate.

Probably the cable from the Audio/Control head. Without that, the servo won't have any control pulses from the tape to lock onto. They work a bit like the sprocket holes on a film and lock the playback electronics to the signal on the tape.

Yes that's right he said the Audio/Control was not connected, thanks for explaining that GaryB. I paid £37.50 to have the diode replaced and had to run it back to the shop to get them to put the Audio/Control right, but it's all OK now some I'm happy.

Thanks for all your help guys, great forum
