Digihome PVRs... Are they quiet?

I have read conflicting and therefore inconclusive views on this. I want to buy a PVR and regardless of all the other funky doo daas it does I want it to be as quiet as a mouse.

Does the digihome do this for you? Is it quiet? Can you hear the hard drive? Does it have a fan?

Digihome PVRs are one of the versions of PVRs made by Vestel. They don't have fans and the Hard Drive is only running when required for Recording, Playback, Timeslip or when accessing data. When running the Hard Drive is very quiet IMO and can only really be heard briefly when it whines slightly as it spins up to speed or clicks as it switches off.

Re: Digihome PVRs... Are they quiet?

I'll fourth it

I have one (mines branded as a "DUAL" - Asda brand) and as said, the only noise is a faint whine as the HDD spins up when accessing the library or making a recording. You can actually only hear it if there is no other noise (ie, you have the TV on mute).

Very unobtrusive, and so far mines not let me down

A very un-usual agreement for any comment about a PVR.

Who's going to be the first to say it rattles like a tin of stones?

Re: Digihome PVRs... Are they quiet?

Not me! Excellent piece of kit - no failures so far after 100's of recordings. Only criticisms are that it can be slow when scrolling horizontally through programme times on the EPG (although scrolling up/down through channels is OK) and series record records everything - repeats, next week's episode on E4 when all you want is this week's on ch. 4 - that kind of thing. Occasionally doesn't select your last-tuned channel when you switch it on - you have to select a channel manually (no big deal). Only one lockup so far, requiring an unplug, after about 5 week's use.Terrific value for money.

I've just realised that no-one in the thread has specifically identified which hardware version of the Digihome (or even other Vestel brand name PVRs) they own. So we are probably referring to a variety of T825 and T816 hardware versions and different Hard Disk sizes. You obviously have a T825 variant (Series Record), I have a T816 Hitachi 160GB. I would expect the issue of noise or lack of it to apply to all versions though.

Re: Digihome PVRs... Are they quiet?

T810 and T816, the latter makes "more noise" because its hard drive goes to sleep and you can hear, in a silent room, the faint whine when it wakes up - say, when you set the first Record in the EPG after the PVR's been idle for a time...

So yes, it's the whole series that is almost as quiet as the grave I'm gonna be late for

Re: Digihome PVRs... Are they quiet?

Mine's certainly quiter than my projector.

Must say I've been totally chuffed with it since I bought after Christmas from Argos. Was a bit worried but glad to say it's been money very very well spent at £99 for the big one (160??).

Yes sometimes the ERP tabbing down is slow, and any drop-out from your freeview signal isn't recorded so if the wind is blowing through the trees opposite when it records it's all a bit jumpy (not really the equipment's fault though). I've had no problem with series record, but it has refused to record once on ITV2 because the signal wasn't strong enough on that particular evening (go figure).

But the picture's great, functions work well, all pretty straight forward - AND you can record two things and watch something previopusly recorded AT THE SAME TIME!

All in all, much better than I had expected. 99%

Re: Digihome PVRs... Are they quiet?

I've got the Wharfedale 160 DTR - bought from Argos last June so it's without the HDMI connector. I think it's the T816 h/w.

It's very quiet, same as others have said to be honest. Only problems I've had with it is twice it's just not recorded. The item (Malaysian F1 live coverage last weekend) was in the Timers list when I went to bed, woke up and it wasn't in the Timers list and it hadn't recoded - I've no idea why. It did free up the space it had pre-allocated though, so it must have realised it hadn't recorded it.
